JAG Question...will the military pay for...
Will the military pay for your law degree?
If yes, how do I sign up? I don't have any problem with serving my country and I would like to see what oppurtunities are avaliable to me.
Thanks in advance

Re: JAG Question...will the military pay for...
Just looked it up on the JAG site since I was intrigued.
http://www.jag.navy.mil/documents/Caree ... %20Pay.pdf
http://www.jag.navy.mil/documents/Caree ... ograms.pdf
On its face, it seems like the answer is just no. You have to have completed 1L before you apply and if you get in you get a big bonus (when you start) which can "pay down debt" and then they have an LRAP and IBR system if you still can't handle your debt.

Valid opinion, and helpful advice.
Having a relative in the Army who was killed in Iraq makes me less tolerant of people who think the military is all about what it can do for you.

And this makes you think you can talk to others like dirt, because of your personal situation (with a dead relative). That actually makes you pretty low to use that as an excuse for your terrible behavior and actions. You are just looking for an out for your actions.
P.S. I had three cousins killed in the war and I'm not acting like a martyr like you and trying to get into pissing match with people.

The issue is that your post, on its face, appeared to be quite flippant. I interpreted it, perhaps incorrectly, as providing that you would only be willing to serve as a JAG in exchange for the JAG corps paying for your education.runningzigzag wrote:Maybe next time I can get some responses from people with actual valid opinions and not comments from someone who makes issults and is rude...and someone who comes off very defensive and is obviously very unstable.
JAG is quite competitive. There are many applicants who are eager to serve. Consequently, none of the services need to offer any kind of bonus.

You interpreted it incorrectly. I want to serve my country and JAG (and I know it's competitve BTW) and also try to get some money to help pay for my educational loans. No differently than the GI Bill and what people do with that money.

can we stop treating service to the military like it's some sort of qualification for sainthood. some people serve for "altruistic" reasons. most people serve because of the 1000 other reasons to do anything. not sure what to do, money for school, friends and family did it etc. Some go because other people present the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as some sort of battle for freedom and democracy.

I have several friends who went to the US Naval Academy and West Point for the free education (and they will tell you that)...they served their 5 years active duty and now are out of the service and debt free.
I have another friend who did ROTC and he will tell you that it paid his educational debt and thats why he did it. He is currently still in and a Colonel.

It's amusing to watch those who have never served identify the reasons for serving. Please shut up and just answer the kids question without writing a novel.

are you in any way denying that different people go to the military for different reasons and that those reasons have varying levels of honor?Mce252 wrote:It's amusing to watch those who have never served identify the reasons for serving. Well, I certainly agree that there are different reasons for different folks but the varying levels of honor is beyond my pay grade.are you in any way denying that different people go to the military for different reasons and that those reasons have varying levels of honor?

fair enough. my only point is that the "everyone who serves is a hero/everything the US military does is about freedom" stuff is what gets good people dead for no reason

I know about 15 people from my hometown who joined up because a judge told them it was either that or jail.
Different people join the military for different reasons. There are certainly those who joined up because they felt it was their patriotic duty, but I'd venture to say they are in the minority. The circumstances surrounding their enlistment doesn't change the fact that they are sacrificing their lives though. I agree that being in the military does not qualify one for sainthood, and I feel I can do that without disrespecting the sacrifice that men and women of the military make on a daily basis.
Also, end dadt.

Re: JAG Question...will the military pay for...
Jeez, calm down people. I went to the Air Force Academy for the free education. I'm in GULC now, still on active duty and taking GI Bill benefits going part time. It's ok to be practical about it.
Anyway, I think the other services have similar programs, but I know the AF has FLEP, where the military sends you through LS on scholarship (won't pay full sticker at the priciest schools, though), and then requires you serve in JAG for an additional 6 years (I believe). Most people who go through it that I've talked to don't recommend it, simply b/c if you pay your own way, the AF gives periodic bonuses after graduation and has shorter service commitment attached. It's just a bit more flexibility. On a side note, if you're active duty, GI Bill pays full tuition and fees w/out a cap.
JAG programs are definitely more competitive than they used to be, and most of my JAG friends really like it (tons of experience, etc). Downsides include having to deploy and move around a lot, but that goes w/out saying.
Short answer: aside from the new GI Bill (which is incredible), the military gives away a lot of money for schooling, but they always get it back from you somehow.

Re: JAG Question...will the military pay for...
My Post 9/11 GI Bill covers will cover almost all of the cost to attend law school thanks to the Yellow Ribbon Program.
JAG carries a hefty commitment to it, and without prior military experience I don't think anyone can really know if it is right for them.
You could always try out the military. With a bachelor's you can go into the service as an officer after OCS, do a job for four years and get out. Then you could go to law school, probably a better one with the military record, and have almost all of it paid for. Or if you like it you can utilize one of the programs for service members to get law school paid for while remaining on active duty which I would assume are a lot less competitive as the candidate pool is much smaller.
Officers also bank a lot of money so you could have a substantial savings if/when you get out.

The problem with "trying out" the military these day is the threat of getting sent to Iraq, or Afghanistan, or, perhaps eventually, North/South Korea and Iran.
Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Joining the military means potentially going to war. If that's what concerns you then entering in any capacity is absurd.Aqualibrium wrote:The problem with "trying out" the military these day is the threat of getting sent to Iraq, or Afghanistan, or, perhaps eventually, North/South Korea and Iran.

Re: JAG Question...will the military pay for...
Here is some information if you sign up for the Army JAG Corps (and you must go Active-Duty)...
1. The Student Loan Replayment Program (SLRP)...will be given $65,000 for an initial 4-year commitment to the US Army...3 equal payments will be made directly to your lenders on you're 1st, 2nd and 3rd anniversary in the JAG Corps.
2. The Judge Advocate Continuation Pay (JACP)...will be given $60,000 for an additional 4-year commitment to the US Army...will be payable biannually in two $30,000 installments.
So you can get up to $125,000 towards paying your student loans back...all you have to do is give up 8 years of your life to the US Army and go on Active Duty.
It's up to you........
I would personally rather pass and take the civilian route myself...joining the military for money related reasons is not a good idea (even if it's for educational money)...especially with all the wars going on around the world. Definitely not a choice to take lightly.

Not all Officers bank a lot, that is "IF" you get promoted to higher ranks.stefpup wrote:Officers also bank a lot of money so you could have a substantial savings if/when you get out.
Ranking up becomes even more competitive as it goes up.
Many are stuck at Major and never go beyond it.
Very good paying ranks are above Major, always, but only a minority can reach them.
But at least you have good hours in JAG, decent travel opportunities, very good benefits etc...
I don't mind getting paid 90k/year on average + all benefits and good hours in JAG.
But if you are a "gold-digging-cash-cow", BigLaw/F500 In-House is where it's at.
Military never pays well, even Physicians and Dentists are getting ripped off, especially Surgeons(No, going through studies and massive stress till 35 of age just to avg 150k + shit hours and no freedom is not worth it.)

Re: JAG Question...will the military pay for...
I'm not sure how much exposure you've had with military medicine or law but there's a reason you get people to work so "cheap" and that's because no real experience is necessary. If you mess up no one can sue you so there's no worries about insurance or anything else (which is a big concern for medical).Seally wrote:Not all Officers bank a lot, that is "IF" you get promoted to higher ranks.stefpup wrote:Officers also bank a lot of money so you could have a substantial savings if/when you get out.

The military is a guaranteed paycheck that pays for full medical, your house and your food before it even starts in on your base pay. For that level of security and the ability to do jobs that in the civilian world you would be completely unqualified to do isn't really working for cheap, I think.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
