Any current Emory students want to weigh in on the job prospects coming out of Emory?

The responses you are going to get:

- LOL none!

- Retake

- Someone will post the ATL article about Emory having something like 7 employers at OCI

- Some thoughtful sole will point out that Atlanta isn't that big of a market when compared to the other major markets, and for whatever reason, Emory doesn't have such a great relationship with the mid-sized firms in ATL. This hurts them a lot because there really aren't many true "biglaw" shops in Atlanta, and New York and DC are tough to come by for almost everyone, but especially Emory grads ITE . (Then there will be an argument about NY being hands down the easiest place to get biglaw)

TITCR, with an add-on that if you are top-15%, you'll do fine, if not, it'll be tough, similar to anyone coming from a school outside the top-10 or so

The article is a big reason I asked. I wanted to see whether other Emory students felt similarly to the writer of the letter in the article.

Also, an article on ATL posted a few days ago said that Atlanta lost more NLJ250 lawyers (as a percentage of initial NLJ250 lawyers) than any other city in the US this past year. Coupled with Emory's previous struggles, that can only mean bad things for job prospects.

Found it:

http://abovethelaw.com/2010/11/nlj-250- ... nt-hiring/
Atlanta suffered the deepest loss this year in the number of attorneys working at NLJ 250 firms in major U.S. cities, but other locations defied a downward trend with slight to moderate increases in headcount.

Experiencing a 7.8% decrease, Atlanta lost 252 attorneys, bringing the total number of NLJ 250 lawyers working there to 2,974.

Sorry, I looked for it, couldn't find it after a cursory search, posted anyway, and went back to my memo. Etiquette fail  Seriously though, that's bad mojo. 252 is like a headquarters-sized office for a middling-sized NLJ firm, and Atlanta's no New York to begin with.

Starting to rethink ATL as a target market, but from Vandy hopefully I'll be competitive.

Meh, that was last year. If I'm remembering correctly and conventional wisdom was true, look at the swing between NY and Chicago between last year's and this year's OCI. Everyone got NY this year, no one got Chicago. NY was practically a no fly zone with all the no-offers last year, IIRC, while Chicago was regarded to be a much safer bet. I seem to recall Michiganders etc. mentioning that their CS office steered them into oblivion by telling them to bid heavy on Chicago. The two cities basically switched places in 12 months. No reason Atlanta pull a similar turnaround. I was under the impression that its economy had stayed pretty solid up until... I guess this past year, but you know what I mean.

You will be. Just to be safe, I'd look at Birmingham as well, especially for litigation. It's close to ATL, and they like Vandy kids.

Yeah it's so hard to predict. Maybe NY will be more competitive this coming year due to people's success this past year.

Yeah I've heard the same. And quite a few firms are looking to hire 1L SAs.

Entirely possible. If this year is any indication, CS offices may tend to over-correct based on the past year's results. Might be in TLS2013's best interests to diversify a bit and be at least a little wary of NY :?

I'll do my best to spin "I went to a deb ball in Birmingham" into a meaningful connection.

Make your connection now. Reach out to Vandy grads working there for advice. Get on their radar now, get invited to the Christmas parties later, profit.

I don't know if this year will be a good indicator for what Emory's performance should be. The school screwed up the yield curve so there are way more students than there should be (280-90 instead of 200-205). My advice would be don't come here if you want to go Northeast or if you're paying full tuition. Personally, I wanted to stay in the deep south and I wasn't willing to take out the 80k+ loans I would have needed at other schools. I think it would be idiotic to come to Emory if you wouldn't be content with staying in the Southeast.

edit: I'm a 1L at Emory.

The bolded portion is what many people were/are doing though.

So they're 280 or so 1Ls or 2Ls? Either way, man, that was really dumb.
