What do people think of the firm? Culture? Reputation? Lit? Corp? Thanks!

Great firm overall. On par with DPW, Cleary, and, to a lesser extend, Debevoise. Not as renowned as S&C and Cravath.

I loved everything about the firm during my CB and was thrilled get an offer. Right now, I'm trying to decide between STB, S&C and Cravath but I would have no regret picking STB over the other two if it comes to that.

Went to DPW, Skadden, Paul Weiss, and Weil. STB was by far my favorite, still waiting for an offer though...

As far as I've heard, STB is the worst in terms of "no responsibility for young associates," at least in litigation. Although she was generally positive, a young associate with whom I interviewed during my callback confirmed that, at least in her experience, the reputation is deserved. She said she didn't mind because doc review isn't stressful, but it was kind of a turn-off for me even though I know doc review is inevitable wherever I end up.

STB seemed very frigid and cold (not temperature-wise) and a the people a bit too reserved on my visit. Thoughts?

Yeah, I thought that too. It was a fine, totally unobjectionable place to go to work and then leave, but it wasn't as "nice" or "friendly" or "chill" as other law firms that market themselves as having a culture.

op here. is it true that young associates in lit don't get responsibility? would i be crazy to choose stb over pw if i want litigation but i liked the people at stb better than pw and also heard pw is a sweatshop and has lots of workaholics. any more info would be very helpful on stb v. pw.

An associate in another market (so probably less competitive with the firms at issue) told me in an interview that Debevoise and STB have both sent associates abroad to do doc review for months at a time. I don't know if that seems bad to you, but a lot of other firms would just outsource that work.

Along the same lines, anyone have a sense for the responsibility STB gives to corporate associates and how it compares with peer firms?

I've heard great things about STB and liked everyone I met when I interviewed there, but this thread is a little disheartening.

Can you guys compare STB with Debevoise?

Also I didn't love Cleary as much, but everyone on this forum seems to have really high opinions of them. They seem to have higher billable expectations than STB and Deb which seem to be confirmed by what I've heard from associates that work at the firms. Plus they don't have as strong corporate or lit departments as STB and Deb. Why the Cleary love??

I spent a lot of time talking to people at different points in their careers, both currently and formerly at STB. Everyone raved about the firm's culture and its willingness to accommodate you having a life. 90% sure will take the offer over S&C and Cravath.

Could you elaborate more specifically? You're anonymous.

The Cleary callback was extremely disorganized. The interviewers didn't appear to have read my resume. The billable hours expectations are from ATL's Career Center LateralLink reviews. Cleary is ~2000 whereas STB and Deb are 1800-2000. And the people I know at Cleary have been worked into the ground, to the point where one associate has already left after < 1 yr. Obviously this is anecdotal. The strength of corporate is also based on Chambers rankings.

I don't believe that any V10 associate bills less than 2000 hours/year, especially in NYC.

Obviously I agreed because I accepted STB's offer over S&C, Cravath and DPW.

I simply loved everything about the firm during my interviews, and most of my friends and people I know who were offered by STB took it over any offers they got from a V5.

Good for all of you. Go sing and hug yourselves around a campfire.

That's a great idea! And we'll put filet mignon on sticks and cook it over the fire and drink some of the finest champagne from paper cups. Thanks, bro.
