tried this at Simpson-Palo Alto w/ recruiter, she said 6 days (!)

The exceptions to this are obviously situations where partner/recruiter volunteers this info.

I think you're within your bounds to ask for a timeframe, but why would you ask the partner instead of the recruiter?

it is ok to shoot a partner/recruiter an email 1 week AFTER the callback with the OP question?

I think a follow-up a week later is definitely ok. Even to say "I am considering other opportunities" is fine.
