Many schools don't have an easier curve for upper-level courses.

Not to mention many of those with high 1L grades end up being on LR/other journals and doing other things that take away their time throughout the year. Add in taking difficult classes in anticipation of applying for clerkships and a small drop really isn't that unrealistic.
