I have had a couple firms that I've done callbacks with say, "If you get other offers before you hear from us, let us know and we can try to get the ball rolling."

Have people been doing this? Should I let the firms I'm still waiting on know that I have another offer I'm considering, even though it's still 3 weeks till the NALP deadline? Or should I wait until it's closer to the deadline?

Also, is there any strategic reason to inform firms or not inform them of other offers?

IMO, you should do it as soon as you get an offer. It shows firms that (a) you're definitely interested in them, otherwise you would have withdrawn, and (b) another firm thinks you'll be a good associate.

I say inform. The entire OCI process is about firms determining value of an unknown factor. Reporting in with offers suggests to firms that other firms have indeed identified you as passing muster.

I told one of the firms when I got an offer, but I didn't update them with the successive ones. Just the first one. I thought it'd be weird to keep calling them.

I was wondering about this myself, since I just got my first offer. My question is, does etiquette dictate that I reveal the name of the firm I have the offer with? I would prefer not to. Is there some way for HR to find this out if I don't tell them, like some kind of central NALP directory of where offers get reported? It seems unlikely but still.

Offers have a 28 day expiration. This means that you need to inform other firms that you have the offer, so they know that they need to go ahead and make their decision. There's no downside to telling them that you have an offer. If anything, having an offer might be a slight bump in your desirability to the other firms.

Human Nature: We always want what others have. So it makes sense that it might help your desirability.

I just tell them I have a few other offers. I let them ask me where. If they ask, I say where.

While in general, I think informing firms of other offers is a good (or at least not a bad) strategy, I'm not sure how effective it would be at a very highly regarded firm. I think the most competitive firms know that the people they're interviewing have other offers pending.

All my offers are from highly competitive firms. Once I got my first offer, I informed the other firms while doing callbacks and let them know the deadline of the first offer. In some cases, this resulted in me getting expedited responses. Firms don't want to lose out on the chance to hire the people they want to hire just because they took to long to make their decision.
