i didn't get that impression at all during my callbacks. the partners i met were really nice, open, friendly, quick to address that the way they handled layoffs upfront was better than "performance-related" dismissals done by other firms because it didn't leave a black mark on an associate's legal career. that said, i got the impression that one would have to work hard to keep a job there, and that they would be perhaps more willing than other firms to cut someone who was slacking, but that doesn't seem like a dealbreaker. i doubt i'm going to accept my offer there for other reasons, but just wanted to add in that the associates i met were not unhappy, and that both were extremely close with the partners they worked for.

On the other hand, the firm does have a good rep from Chambers, i.e. it is known for its partners (and the partners make bank).

You'd think they could off on the domestic violence until the interview was over...

The funny thing is the interviewers were being super nice, I was thinking maybe I was wrong about Cadwalader. And then on two separate occasions associates knocked on the doors and all hell broke loose.

Pretty similar both times, get out and don't knock when the door is shut.

Elaborate...

Does Cad have the lowest QOL in the v50?

Regardless of the horror stories - any offers for those who interviewed last week?

I find this interesting. If the partners make so much bank, they could have probably done without layoffs, or at least with a lot fewer layoffs.

Rather than cut into their PPP, they layoff to keep them steady.

Aren't there some firms that did little or no layoffs ITE and saw a fairly significant PPP drop?

yea, this is what scares me. and the PPP hasnt gone down, so with less associates, they must be working them to the bone. esp when cadwalader was known for working their associates extremely hard even before the layoffs...

Granted, but there is less work in the sense that certain departments have likely disappeared (e.g., securitization - which was huge at CWT). Also, associates started on time.

A 3L at my school that summered there said they had 6 GULC and 5 Michigan kids, or the other way around (5 GULC/6 Mich). Can't remember.

From a law student/associate's perspective, the sacrifice is noble and fantastic. But keep that PPP down and partners will eventually leave. When partners leave, so does work. When there's no work, there's layoffs.
And if the money is the only thing keeping the partners there, why go there to work?

Further, no one said keep PPP down, but the first reaction would have been "suffer a PPP hit for a year or two" rather than "lay off 40% of our attorneys."

Can anyone tell me why the QOL at Cadwalader is so infamous? It doesn't sound like the hours are any worse than at other big law firms. And I've heard stories about -- very -- difficult partners everywhere. Why is Cadwalader known to be so bad? I enjoyed my callback but am scared about its reputation.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
