How does this work? What kind of mileage do I charge? Do I charge for parking as well, and what is reasonable in the city?

Also, do people generally ask for meals to reimbursed or just pay themselves?

May vary state to state or firm to firm

One firm gave me a NALP form where they had penciled in 0.50/mi.

Are you expected to have receipts for gas or somehow else prove how many miles you drove or do you simply write in the mileage and be done with it?

How far is this place that you need to be reimbursed for gas? Just bite the bullet if it is, like, 20 bucks...why don't we ask them to reimburse for dry cleaning and subway rides too?

There's this whole, amazing world outside of Manhattan and downtown DC. You should check it out sometime.

Subway rides are reimbursed.
Dry cleaning is not.

Not everyone is close to firm locations. If I had to pay for my callbacks out-of-pocket, I wouldn't be able to afford to go on them.

You ask for subway reimbursement?

No kidding. I'm taking a bus to Boston in a few weeks, and I am going to be out of pocket, like, 40 bucks. There was no mention of reimbursement. I'm not complaining.

I'm sorry the firm you're targeting is not the caliber you had hoped.

Any NALP firm will happily reimburse these expenses.

1. Its really not that bad of a drive
2. I prefer driving over flying and the nearest airport isnt extremely close
3. I wanted to have the ability to schedule additional callbacks without having to change my plane (which worked out well)
4. I wanted to have control of when I left, both in terms of days/time of day that was flexible

Not to mention, getting to the airport, waiting an hour, flying an hour, getting to the hotel from the airport, it honestly ends up taking almost as long as driving.

No. It didn't apply in my case, but it was listed both on the NALP form and in the memo I got from the firm as something that is covered.
Would you ask for it?

I wouldn't doubt that most firms use the IRS mileage rate, which is currently $0.50/mile. http://www.irs.gov/taxpros/article/0,,id=156624,00.html
