Yeah you're probably right.

~3.43 = top third, ~3.62 = top 15%, depending on the section.

I figure it's around top quarter, but whatever.

How is the school doing? I have a friend down there, but I am hesitant to ask him directly. Good? Bad? Mediocre?

It depends on who you talk to. Some people did very well, others didn't. That's a symptom of the economy, the markets chosen, grades/resume, and interview skills.

How is top 1/3 doing? That is where he is.

I have friends in Top 1/3 with at least 6 CBs. I'm Top 15 and I have over 10. I also have Top 1/3 friends with less than 6.

^ It's going to vary from person to person subject to the factors I mentioned earlier (a few posts above). I have a friend who is definitely below median who ended up getting 3 callbacks at least, some with very big Chicago firms. He's URM, but that's not enough with those grades. So, I think calling it a bloodbath or a soaring success based on an unrepresentative sample is premature. For all I know, I'll strike out with all my CBs. I hope not, obviously, but a final conclusion for the whole process can't be made until at least mid October IMO.

so what does everyone think median is then? I think I'm probably at almost EXACTLY the median and have 0 CBs. I'm actually pretty much over it, but I would like to know if I've been accurately interpreting my GPA.

Well, that's a good question because we don't have an overall rank. I'd say that if you are Top 15% in your section, you're probably going to hit the Top 1/3 or so (depending on your GPA) once all sections are combined (based on historic trends). If you're in the Top 1/3 bracket, then where you stand is more questionable and I don't think we can actually determine that yet given the new curve. For the Class of 2011, Top 1/3 is a 3.54, which (and this includes old curve info) is towards the high end of the Top 1/3 bracket from 2008-2009.

So, I'd say 3.6+ is probably Top 1/3. Beyond that, who knows.

3.6 as cutoff for certain? No way. For overall rank anybody above 3.5 is definitely top 1/3.

Worth noting at this moment the impact of main journal. I know, big surprise, kids with main journal are getting more callbacks than kids without.

But I had no idea it was THE golden ticket WITHOUT WHICH one cannot count, based on percentages, on anything. Please save your flames to the effect of "I/My best friend/My mom/Whoever was not on main journal and had an awesome OCI." We do not care about your flukey, unrepresentative outcome. I submit my own experience merely as a case study, which you are free to hash over its level of representativeness as to the question of "effect of main journal v. secondary/no journal."

I know of at least three different individuals at GULC who are .15-.25 GPA below my score, who lack basic social graces, and who have otherwise nothing particularly outstanding or significant on their resume. They all have main journal. I am committed to litigation and made the choice to pursue experiential, real-life law opportunities while in school over seeking the tedium and time-wasting that is journal. Please save your "OMGZ, Journal RULEZ and you probably COULDN'T HACK IT" flames. I have an absolutely stunning interview presentation and a tight rejoinder for any interviewer who raises eyebrows at the lack of journal. I targeted DC firms known to be top litigation shops, with easily-met GPA medians (mostly), and known to be increasing or at least maintaining their litigation departments and summer classes.

I have, so far with lots of firms still silent, 3 callbacks. The individuals I described above also targeted DC firms, admittedly with imperfect overlap. They have respectively received 13, 15, and 16 callbacks. Just off of OCI, including hospitality suite drop-offs. I must say I'm surprised at the level, the degree of significance being placed on this main journal resume item. We all know it is significant, but it is starting to look like the LSAT in terms of straight disqualification for lots of people simply for not having this feature.

Feel free to discuss in your view the various features of law firms and lawyers that compel them to value something like the willingness to cite check versus dynamic interpersonal and persuasive talent. From a straight business standpoint, seems like the second guy is the one you can count on to earn. But maybe I've just misread the landscape. I know firms are looking for those machine cogs that they can burn through ever couple years, but you would think someone would also be looking for partner potential, game-winning potential.

With the winning personality on presentation in this thread, I am shocked OCI went poorly.

Obviously not. And I love that, as always, the Internet proves to be a place of open and productive discourse, as opposed to a place for knee-jerk, useless insults. You ftw.
