ITT we post questions from interviews

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:18 am

Obvious ones:
1.) Why law school?
2.) Why Firm X?
3.) Why City X?

Other ones I've gotten:
1.) Tell me about one thing on your resume you're most proud of?
2.) What are 3 qualities that you think effective attorneys have?

What is your greatest accomplishment?

What is your greatest failure?

Tell me about a time you came up with a creative solution to a problem.

Why did you transfer?

Do you have an interest? (Litigation v. transactional)

Why us?

Tell me about this internship/job/etc.?

Are you best at writing, research, or oral advocacy?

What questions do you have for us?

Here are a few time-wasters if you run out of better questions for them:

what's day-to-day like?

How do they assign work/evaluate performance?

pro bono program?

What differentiates you from XYZ?

What do you like most about working at X?

Him: why patent litigation?

Me: Well, I like the adversarial nature of it, and the ability to learn about new technologies and utilize the technical aspects of my background seems like a good way to keep things feeling fresh and not so tedious.

Him: What if I told you you might be working on the same case, and little else, for three years straight?

Me: Well, I understand there's no such thing as a free lunch, and that everyone has to pay their dues, but that as you get more experienced you'll be able to do more interesting work .

Him: So you're saying you'll do anything for money.

Me: Pretty much.

Hardest one I've received so far: "tell me about a time when you took an unfavorable position and what the result of taking that position was."

Had a dream last night where the first question was "Why are you late?"

Hope that's not foreshadowing....

Would you rather work in a team or by yourself responsible for only your output? Explain.

Would you rather be evaluated as an individual or a team? Explain.

How would you handle a situation where someone in your group wasn't doing his or her share?

Leadership, Teamwork, Entrepreneurial Spirit...
Take 30 seconds and sell me on how you embody these things, and what makes you a great candidate for Firm X.

Who have been your favorite profs?
(This one scares me because it's always an alum that asks, and I'm afraid my answer will include profs they hated, which will lead them to assume we have very different personalities.)

A pretty clever one that I got was "What are you thinking for a topic for your student note?"

I foresee myself failing to answer a question like this only because the only answers I can think of are very, very dirty.

I had an interviewer ask me what my religion was, and then asked what I thought about all these labor unions taking over the world.

Best two q's (non-law) I've ever gotten:

1. What's the biggest dinner party you've ever hosted, and what did you serve?
2. What's bookmarked on your home computer?

Both are so leading and so enlightening (to bypass the can't ask q's) I've used them for my own candidates

I got this one. I probably should have had a better prepared answer :( I somehow mumbled my way through the answer but ended up having a nice conversation about interesting areas of patent law about which little has been written

I've had questions where the interviewer asked me about my grades--i.e., what happened (i'm below median).

I don't really understand the question -- what are you supposed to say to something like this? What did you say?

Him: How much scholarship money did you give up to transfer?

Me: 25k a year.

Him: What the hell is wrong with you?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
