60% of a firm's interview slots are filled by preselects

20% of a firm's interview slots are filled by preselects from students who bid them in their Top 5

20% of a firm's interview slots are filled by lottery

Probably around 12 to 13.

I should probably know this - do alternates count toward the max of 30?

CS says no, but that if you get off the alternate list, they'll fix it so that you get your top 30 firms.

Other question: if you accept an alternate spot, are you taken out of the lottery for that firm?

Kevin Donovan is great, but I fault him for mentioning alternates and the lottery so often near one another. Alternates are automatic: as soon as people have declined their pre-selects, the alternate list slots interviews where possible. Once that process is done and finished, the lottery is run. So if you fail to get an alternate, you'll be in the lottery (and obviously if you get an alternate you will not be).

I'm very encouraged by his most recent email. An average of 9 pre-selects is stellar, and quite a bit better than last year. After alternates, the lottery, etc. I think people will be sitting on many more interviews than in the past.

If the average is 9 pre-selects and the top quarter is getting 40+, I'm very curious about the bottom quarter.

The median has to be something like 7 preselects.

I've been piecing together what info I can. Top quarter isn't getting anything like 40 pre-selects. They are doing fine (and that wasn't always true last year) but the only people I know who approach 40+ screeners graded on to law review by a wide margin.

I certainly hope everyone else in the top quarter didn't get 25 bids, or I'd feel left out. I'm like top 15-20 percent, got a lot less. Of course, I bid DC...

How many did you get? What market? There aren't many data points to go off of. The anonymous feature means you can be totally frank.

Only DC, 11 preselect, 11 alternate.

Thanks. Removed speculation then, really don't know how people have done. 11 pre-selects in DC is great, and 11 alternates should be very promising given where you stand. Good luck!

Bottom 40% (3.2ish)

11 Preselects, 6 Alternates, pretty sure I'm still waiting on one of my top 5, based on what preselects I got.

Boston: 7 Preselects, 1 Alternate
NYC: 2 Preselects, 2 Alternate
DC: 2 Preselects, 3 Alternate

It's tough out there.

Edit: One callback with a top Boston firm this week, not through OGI

Only one mod goes to UVA now, and I doubt he cares that much.

Everyone I've talked to (GPAs ranging from ~3.1 to ~3.6) had at least 15 preselects.

There must have been a lot of sub-median folks throwing DC bids in the garbage for the average to only be 9.

Also ~3.2ish.

20 Preselects, 8 Alternates. Wasn't preselected by 2 of my top 3, so I'm hoping to add at least 2 more interviews through the lottery.

I bid mostly on NYC and secondary markets, some I had strong ties to and others I did not. I went 0 for 2 with DC firms.

Still, I am the original UVA mod. And I'm pretty sure I met the other remaining UVA mod. Great guy.

Yeah, I sent about 10 bids to DC (3.2ish), and although I got a few bites, I regret the decision.

I should have looked in more secondary markets. I assumed if I didn't have a connection, a bid would be useless.
