Lower T14 Advice for Chicago

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 05, 2010 7:16 pm

I have a 3.7 from a lower T14 school (not Georgetown). I have decided not to try NYC or DC because of the competition, and I grew up in Illinois which will probably make moving back there plausible in the eyes of interviewers. Are Sidley, Jenna, Meyer reasonable prospects? If not what other large firms should I focus on? Or maybe I should try for smaller firms like Bartlet Beck.

Want to work in litigation. Any insight appreciated.

And, yes, I was joking about Bartlet Beck.

NYC is MUCH easier to get than Chicago. The class sizes were tiny this past summer.

With his GPA at any lower t-14, I think OP is fine for Chicago.

I have a feeling that this year NYC is going to be flooded with apps...making it a lot more competitive than last year when people avoided NYC.

Bartlit Beck is much harder to get than the other firms you mentioned.

Yeah, focusing on Chicago as "safer" than NYC = baad idea. Might be fewer people applying, but a lot of the Chicago firms have small enough class sizes right now that they can take their pick of UChicago/Northwestern/Michigan kids, with a few HYSCCN for flavor. As I've mentioned before, for example, Mayer has people from UChicago, Northwestern, and Michigan this year, and 1 Harvard student--that's it. And you're talking top of the class types, too.

So... good luck?

I summered at Reed Smith (formerly Sachnoff and Weaver) a couple years ago and loved it. Good solid firm, not the best in the city but plenty of interesting work and smart people. Best of all: they're nice people. And they don't work themselves to death. I'd definitely bid for an interview.
