ok... so can you make really strong connections or is it family ties only?

hypo: if you were working for a law firm as a 0L (I know it usually doesn't help), can you turn that into a strong connection? if so, how? has anyone gotten a 1L SA position this way?

also, do 1L positions in US firms overseas help with 2L OCI?

I mean, of course you can turn this into a strong connection. Its a job, you're supposed to make strong connections there.

I don't really know how to tell you how besides being good at your job and impressing the people you work for on both a professional and personal level. Get to know the senior partners. Basic stuff. I don't think a 2 or 3 month internship will cut it, but if you're taking some time off before work, it could help.

However, if you work for a firm that doesn't hire 1Ls are a rule (most have set guidelines), you just need to wait until 2L.

Its humble of you to let us know you landed an amazing position that is evidently of no interest to you when you don't seem to plan on answering any of the OP's questions.

No, I feel that I did answer the OP's question. Your response is unjustified. First, the firm that I am working with is regional and was willing to hire 1L's. The majority of my classmates that did land 1L firm positions did so in regional markets where they grew up. Second, the the firm was selective ... they typically hire top 5% from regional schools ... perhaps top 20% from the T14.

Also, I sent out my resume on December 1st. I wouldn't wait any longer.

Doyleoil is correct. The only 1L firm jobs that I am aware of in Chicago this year were minority hires. I have a few friends who landed 1L summer gigs w/ big NY firms.

The firm that I am working for is a great firm in a market that I have ties to, but I am just hoping to end up in Dallas.

Mass emailings for me ... there was very little in the way of on-campus OCI this year for 1L's at NU. In fact, a couple of firms that came on campus to interview, didn't even end up hiring anyone.

You have got to be kidding me. I never said all major firms in all major markets hire(d) 1Ls, so I'm really not sure what the purpose of your statement was.

Also, are you sure about it? I'd think K&E or Sidley would have a few 1Ls.

the only "purpose" was to make people aware how brutal things are in certain markets for 1L's, chicago possibly being the worst. no point in your getting all offended, as though i was somehow questioning your unabashed brilliance.

and no, i don't think sidley hired 1L's. if ke did, it was only a miniscule number. mayer definitely did not hire 1L's.

edit: sidley chicago's nalp form shows a big fat 0 1L's for 2010. but who knows, those forms are notoriously bad. kirkland chicago did not fill in a number for 1L's for 2010.

A not entirely unexpected retort. But I'm prepared. My post was in response to another post in this thread that suggested it was impossible. I, at the time, was too lazy to quote it.

Anyways, this convo is now pointless. Sigh you people.

honestly my first post was really just a laconic comment on the state of my market - i wasn't trying to "critique" your post or refute you in any way - just some frustration coming out, really - i also wasn't trying to turn this thread into a pissing contest - though i do enjoy them from time to time

i'm not going back through this thread again, but are you in lit - that might explain this unfortunate devolution

+1. I have thought that from the moment NYAssociate starting posting here.

We appreciate your insights, but we'd also appreciate you losing the attitude.

No, I feel that I did answer the OP's question. Your response is unjustified.

I think the other information you presented here and your follow-ups is very helpful, and congrats on having such a great opportunity and (presumably) other prospects.

However, gimme a break. This was the OP:

TheBigMediocre wrote:For the rare individuals who are studly enough to get a 1L SA...Do these positions lead to full-time offers? Are they expected to come back 2L summer?

Looking back on your original answer, quoted above, all you state is that you recieved an offer, did not accept it, and you speculate that would likely lead to another offer. No experience, no knowledge of your basis for that speculation and no explaination of the requirements for 2L summer. In fact, all your post does is affirm that the OP has a basis to his curiosity: there are 1L SA positions, and some might lead to offers. Then, you go out of your way to make it clear you won't be accepting the type of position OP is hoping for/interested in.

Like I said, I think your information on how you went about applying is helpful and again, congrats but you gotta admit...your original post doesn't exactly come across as helpful or full of humility. Or any of it.

I am a 1L SA in NYC. I go to a T14 school, Top 40% of my class.

I applied to 10 regional firms back home (midwest) and a firm I use to work for (paralegal 2yrs) in NYC.
I got 3 phone interviews back in region (logistics really killed me as firms didn't want to pay $ to fly me in and out I think) + I suck at phone interviews.
While I didn't get any jobs from the regional mailing I did get letters from 6 firms asking if I am still interested to do 2L interviews in August.

I used my connections at my old firm to get the first interview and my foot in the door. In my 2 yrs there I worked hard, made friends and generally played model employee and it really helped!
As for 1L offers, my firm in the past gave them but as of now, I believe I would have to come back next summer to get an offer. I really like this firm so I probably will come back if invited.

I only got a job because I'm an EE IP, so I am not going to claim membership in the rare group of 1L students who got a GP firm job. For whatever my qualified status is worth - I feel like my firm has made it abundantly clear that my body of work will be the interview itself, and that an offer will be extended so long as I contribute in a meaningful way to the firm. In other words, I would have to be sub-par to not get called back. These could've been niceties extended to me during my first week, but I think that's really the way my particular firm works.
