Having interned with a judge, I can tell you that clerking appears to be one of the best experiences you can possibly have. If you are just dollars and cents, it probably doesn't appeal to you... but if you are trying to develop your skills as a lawyer it's a really good option.

It's a prereq for academe, for one. Also, in a prestige-obsessed profession, you can't do much better. Third, there's usually a bonus involved. Fourth (mentioned last based on the nature of your question) it's an excellent way to develop your skills as an attorney.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I don't trust any BIGLAW firm to honor an offer ITE. Maybe the scamblogs are getting the better of me, but I just want to get out of debt as soon as possible. No interest in academia, but I am a prestige whore. We'll see I guess.

Found the UVa avg GPA's for COA clerkships from 2007. GPA's could be higher ITE.

Here are the average GPAs of successful COA clerkship applicants at UVA:

Second Circuit 3.77
Fourth Circuit 3.81
Fifth Circuit 3.67
Sixth Circuit 3.60
Seventh Circuit 3.75
Eighth Circuit 3.59
Ninth Circuit 3.69
Tenth Circuit 3.58
Eleventh Circuit 3.73
D.C. Circuit 3.75
Federal Circuit 3.49
