Straight Passing at YLS: OCI Chances - Poll
I'm at Yale.
My grades are 7 CRs* and 3 Ps
Can I break V50? V25? V10? V5?
- - - - - - - - - - - -
GRADES FOR ALL DEGREE STUDENTS
Honors: Work done in the course is significantly superior to the average level of perfor-
mance in the School.
Pass: Successful performance of the work in the course.
Low Pass: Work done in the course is below the level of performance expected for the
award of a degree.
Credit: The course has been completed satisfactorily; no particular level of performance
is specified.
Failure: No credit is given for the course.
There is no required “curve” for grades in Law School classes.
Individual class rank is not computed.

Can't imagine straight passing at YLS disqualifies you from any but the most selective firms (WLRK, CSM, S&C, W&C, and the elite boutiques). Wouldn't shock me if you could still get something at one of the less selective V10s or at any V20.

it's a good thing most yale students probably have some internal drive
what a shitty grading system
that said, i've heard cadwalader likes yale students these days
(and to end the sarcasm already, rvp is actually probably right)

sure it hurts you a little at the top but it bails out everyone else.

completely missed my point - it's not about who it "hurts" or "helps," as yale students have very little to worry about in that regardmiamiman wrote:? shitty...doyleoil wrote:it's a good thing most yale students probably have some internal drive

Why then shitty at all? Or was that lumped into the sarcasm bit about Cadwalader?doyleoil wrote:completely missed my point - it's not about who it "hurts" or "helps," as yale students have very little to worry about in that regardmiamiman wrote:? shitty...doyleoil wrote:it's a good thing most yale students probably have some internal drive

Not knowing where the hell you stand in the class is particularly shitty. I can be above median (my ass I am), I can be at median (I doubt it), or I can be dead last ( . . . but someone out there must have received an LP. Right? Right? RIGHT????? ). I have no clue.miamiman wrote:? shitty...doyleoil wrote:it's a good thing most yale students probably have some internal drive

Btw, whenever someone mentions Cadwalader, I immediately think of Cadbury eggs. Delicious.

i know there's a school of thought out there that looks at law school in purely instrumental termsmiamiman wrote: Why then shitty at all?
i don't buy into that bullshit myself
and when it comes to, not just learning the law, but learning how to be (at minimum) a professional in a professional world, a grading system like this has the potential to breed extreme "shirking," to borrow a term from a pretty well-known professor of mine
which is why it's good there's probably plenty of internal drive - but if there's not, well, you probably end up with lawyers like this wack job:

If I were OP I would talk to 2L/3L and see what range of firms I realistically should bid on and then do a ton of research on those firms and focus on having a really good interview.

H's are indeed discretionary. And YLS professors are a bunch of pushovers.thesealocust wrote:wut? You're kidding, right? Firms do like to see you perform in law school, even from Yale. There are Yale grads upand down the V100, I'm sure the 'lower' end firms with Yale grads are the ones w/o many Hs. Since Hs are discretionary, OP's performance is very likely bottom of the class. I wouldn't be surprised if big law were possible, but dude is NOT getting Skadden with straight Cr/P grades.RVP11 wrote:Can't imagine straight passing at YLS disqualifies you from any but the most selective firms (WLRK, CSM, S&C, W&C, and the elite boutiques). How are you defining big law? Serious question. Do I have a shot at V50?thesealocust wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if big law were possible

Damn I'm old. I hear Cadwalader and all I can think of is this:
--ImageRemoved--
A V100 position for the first person to name that movie.

To be honest, I've always wondered about this. I don't go to Yale, I think you really need to have Career services talk with you. My gut says the outlook is bad. There's just nothing distinguishing you, and every firm is having to make cuts. I mean it's still Yale, but not having a single thing going for you will make you stand out like a sore thumb.
Except for, you know, the fact that s/he got into Yale.
OP: I seriously haven't heard of any Yalies having difficulties, even ITE. Check with OCS and 3Ls.

Reading that actually makes me uncomfortable because it is so unbelievably awkward. I have never seen such an incredible case of social awkwardness... it honestly makes me wonder if that email exchange was real. I was more professional and well put-together at 14 than this dude is now, and I was a little shitstick when I was 14.miamiman wrote:

This makes me feel very optimistic about my employment prospects. Hopefully all my peers are this socially inept! (kidding... sort of)
PS. I also didn't know anyone uses more parentheticals than I do. I'm shocked.

No, social awkwardness is unique to YLS grads who work at Quinn and who are ultimately fired for failing the CA bar (3 times). That, unfortunately, makes for a small subset of "aspies" in biglaw.romothesavior wrote:Reading that actually makes me uncomfortable because it is so unbelievably awkward.
