What's the job market going to be like in 2014?

Post by Dr. Strangelove » Thu May 06, 2010 12:19 pm

Thoughts?
Also my mom is really nagging me to not go to law school (she thinks I'm going to end up unemployed and wants me to go into public accounting instead)- while she can't force me to not go to law school, she's certainly going to try to convince me not to go. She's very stubborn and so am I.

36.12% better.

Actually, I imagine that it will have to be either better or worse... I don't imagine that it will stay steady. The economy tends to be cyclical, so since we are now at the low end of things, it should definitely be somewhat better unless a major disaster were to occur which would cause it to get even worse.

Still, I imagine that firm hiring won't be as rampant as it used to be. I have the feeling that firms have learned their lessons regarding hiring too many SAs and paying too much money... if that is the case, then I would imagine that the improvement to law hiring is disproportionately low compared to the overall improvement in the economy. I could be (and hope that I am) wrong.

I wish your mom and my mom would switch places. My mother thinks I'm a "special flower" and will succeed against the odds. She has no concept of the legal market or of the debt I'm about to incur.

That is a good point. My mom is a realist and is aware that the economy could just kick me in the ass- even if I "try my best".

But seriously, it is very cool that your mom is not a "precious little snowflake/my son is gonna my little lawyuh" type of person. We could use more moms like yours.

What a ridiculous question. 2014 is well after 2012, so the world will be long gone by then anyway.

WSJ reported a 32,000 increase of private sector jobs in April up from March. Government workers, including a substantial amount of census takers are not included in that figure.

I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

I think you're right. In case law school seems like a bad idea at the end of 2011-she has given me some viable options of what to do after college.

I am a CPA for a big 4 public accounting firm. I graduated in 2008, and my entire plan was to get my CPA, work for 2 years, and go back to law school. After being in corporate accounting, i've had enough. Accounting is just as messed up as the legal market is. Partnership tracks, if you're lucky, (no joke) are 15-16 years (compared to 10-12 in the 90's), and everyone is planning their exit strategy. I am doing a complete 180 and I am going back to school and enrolling in a post-bac program in hopes for medical school. I figure I might as well utilize my ugrad high GPA for something...it really is that bad.

Now, that being said, if I were in your shoes right now, id suggest hiding in academia (or say some bs program like TFA or peace corps) , because I don't see anything changing for at least 5 years. But, if you are set on going to law school, work 2 years, wait for the storm to blow over abit (then you'll be certified for accounting), and go back to law school. Things in the work-force are getting better, but the only thing that'll solve it is time...

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
