best recourse for looking up non-NALP firms.

After I read the earlier thread on the 0L prep job hunt, I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of firms to mail. My girlfriend will be working that summer in a small secondary market where there are only 3 nalp firms listed. Is their an equivalent of NALP for smaller firms or do I just google law firms in city x and see what comes up?

Also, would working at a smaller firm in a secondary market hurt my chances at working at a more prestigious firm in New York as a 2L?

Your law school's career services office is one of the best places to start, especially because they will have relevant information about what smaller firms have ties to your school. Otherwise chambers and partners / martindale are decent resources, as is vault (100 + best of the rest), NLJ (250 biggest firms), and AmLaw (100 highest grossing) though obviously few, if any, firms from the latter sources will fail to be NALP firms.

Martindale-Hubble index. Almost all non-solo firms are listed, and it's searchable by many variables, including location.
