SEC 1L Summer Honors

Post by Danteshek » Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:00 am

I have a phone interview on Friday for a summer position at the Securities and Exchange Commission (in DC). Has anyone done this? What should I expect?

No, but congrats on even getting an interview. It's a tough gig to score.

First question will be "why do you want to work for the SEC."

In my interview (also for this Summer in DC) we then talked about experiences on my Resume that were relevant to working at the SEC. Did not have any hypotheticals.

Congrats on the interview!!- I am waiting to hear back.
Good luck!

Thanks. I spoke to an alum of the program yesterday and he told me the same thing. I also have relevant experience. They are definitely my first choice. I would accept an offer in any department, including janitorial.

They asked me which groups I wanted. Be careful how you word it and be sure to be open to any possibility b/c they definitely look at your resume and have something in mind for you.

Just had the interview. It went really well I think. I asked for division of investment management because that is where my frame of reference is. My second choice is trading and markets because I don't know a lot about broker dealers and SRO's, but I want to learn. After I explained why I wanted to work for the SEC, there were a couple of interesting questions. First - imagine yourself as chairman of the SEC - what issues need attention? Second - they weren't very familiar with my law school, so they wanted to know more about Southwestern and why I decided to attend. Third - they wanted to know in detail about the volunteer work I've been doing. They gave me credit for my strong grades.

Congratulations on the offer!

I am interviewing with them as well and could really use some advice on what to expect?

It seems like the questions involve...

1. Why do you want to work for the SEC?

2. Which group/division are you interested in working for?

3. If you were Chairman, what issues would demand your attention?

Can you guys please let me know of any other questions or provide advice on what to expect?

Any advice is much appreciated.

yepper--questions are which division you want to work in and why; what would you do if you were a manager/in charge of SEC; why the SEC, explain your resume, etc.

They prefer June 1 or 7. But you can ask for another start date.

shameless bump.

i am a 0L so i usually follow a don't touch just look philosophy in legal employment threads. however, i have an interview coming up for the SEC Summer Honors Undergraduate program and i was wondering if anyone has any insight at all as to what that could entail. i don't have much of any background in securities or econ at all, but i am really interested in learning more about it all. i have some government work experience, but that's about it. any advice/tips??? thanks :)

The over-lawyering in the SEC is the same reason the retards who went in to investigate Madoff didn't catch him. Hope you have at least an inkling of experience in finance.

That's exactly right. In the past there were too many young hotshot attorneys without a clue about the industry. My guess is that they are trying harder than ever to weed those people out.

To those who've received an offer from the DC location...have any of you heard from the SEC in a while? I received an offer late February and sent in all of my HR paperwork at the very beginning of March. I have not heard from them since then. I was under the impression that they would be sending background check forms once the HR forms were submitted. Anyone else have a similar experience with them so far?

I got assigned to the Division of Enforcement. Anyone heard back with confirmation on start dates, etc.?

Also, is anyone working in the DC office looking for a summer roommate/housing? Any help would be appreciated.

How many lawyers are there at the SEC?

What are the hours like for the associate-level attorneys there? like biglaw or 9-5?
