1) Some professors ask the high grades in their class

2) Some professors publicly advertise the position

3) Some professors ask students they have gotten to know

4) Some professors ask other professors for recommendations

5) Most professors higher somebody who asks them for an RA position. It's fine to send an email 'cold', and probably encouraged if you're looking into it.

Most professors are pretty nice people. In my experience, if you e-mail them cold and show some interest in their field and just ask some general questions about whether they are planning to hire an RA and what they are going to be working on then they will be more than happy to talk with you about it.

I stopped by my professor's office randomly. He told me he didn't know if he was hiring but to send him a resume. I'm pretty sure he didn't know who I was, since I never said a word in his class. After sending in my resume (and noting that I had the top grade in his class), I got an interview and was offered the job on the spot. Worked out nicely.

I like watching the progression of your threads. The other day it was 'can I get away with not doing legal work?', now it's 'how do I get an RA job?'. In a few days I'm usre it will be 'any tips for doing well as an RA?' ;)

This just made me smile. I was wondering if someone was going to catch that. :)
