Interviewing

Postby jnorsky » Wed Jan 27, 2010 6:05 pm

I am going to be attending a T10 school next year and biglaw is one of my goals. I was wondering whether people have insight on how to work on my interviewing skills. I come from a business background and I know the basic things (know the company well, know your strengths, etc) but does anyone have advice on how to impress interviewers from top law firms other than grades and what I said before? I know i am a likable guy, but being likable with friends is different from having interviewers like you. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

practice interviewing and networking. Go to any networking function you can and force yourself to talk with partners of law firms. Ask them to give you an interview so you can practice. Ask them for what makes a strong and memorable interview.

You can easily start any interview off on the good foot by name dropping a colleague the interviewer works for and then steering the conversation from there..."oh we met at x..yeah i'm really interested in y" etc.

That will make the interview feel more like a conversation, make you and the interviewer feel less awkward and won't degrade into a simple Q & A for 20 minutes.
