Do law firms and businesses want your LSAT score??

Post by alltheway » Sat Jan 23, 2010 3:27 pm

In seeking employment, do law firms and businesses want your LSAT score? Is it expected that you put your score on your resume or do these places care far more about your performance in actual law school courses? Thanks in advance.

Fancy consulting firms and i-banks sometimes ask for standardized test scores.

i was also told it's not asked, and that it's even improper for them to ask. but i interviewed with a small/medium firm in NYC, and the guy asked me point blank what my score was. caught me off guard since i was told it's never done, but i guess it can happen.

Our CPC was absolutely adamant about this.

This is kinda tangential, but our career office said it was perfectly good to put our scholarships on our resume in the education section. Not the amount, but the name of it. For a 1L with no grades, I see how it might help as an indirect way of implying a high probability of a high LSAT score for people who care about that, but I don't know if firms read into it that deeply. If nothing else it implies that you are somewhat above average at your school (unless you're at Michigan or another school where >50% of the class receives some amount in grants).

This is true. I was even talking to an accenture guy once about MBA prospects and he straight-up asked me my GMAT score.

I had my LSAT, ACT, and GMAT on my resume. I think it helped me land interviews with the best firms, but I also think it hurt me during final rounds when people thought I was going to bolt to law school or B-school after a year.

Law GPA is all that matters -> the LSAT is meaningless once you have grades

It seems, in general, most numbers (GPA, SAT, LSAT, etc) that were pinned to our foreheads only matter as steppingstones. Once you get into college, your HS GPA and SAT score are meaningless. Same for UG numbers I assume. Someday, the one resume line "Supreme Court justice" implies sufficiently that you did ok in HS, got a decent SAT, did ok in UG, got a decent LSAT, did ok in law school, had a series of jobs that you didn't screw up too badly.

This is not true. When I was interviewing with private equity firms and hedge funds, 7 out of 8 asked for SAT and basically only cared about that. They know that college (undergrad) is not hard and grades are inflated ridiculously high at most schools. That being said, it makes alot less sense to ask for your LSAT score because in LS you are graded on a curve.

detljgh wrote:Yes. Many federal departments, such as mine, ask for LSAT right on the application. Interestingly enough, Law School GPA is not mentioned, although I imagine you'd need to provide it eventually.

Interesting, do you know which ones off hand? I am just curious. (not that it matters, if they ask then they ask...)

Would it be inappropriate/toolish to write SAT/LSAT on your resume if you scored very well?

Yep.

Even if they are, no one should be asking. So you shouldn't be volunteering.

Maybe you can write down your percentile range if you scored very, very well. I think this helps especially if you're a URM, since some people tend to think URMs gain admission only because of the large boost they receive.

Are you saying that people do not think this or that it's not true?
