Anonymous because I don't want to be ridiculed too badly for this.
Can any biglaw associates give some insight into how accurate the TV show "The Good Wife" is? Leaving aside the obvious things like too much cleavage, that is. The show depicts biglaw associates working late, doing witness prep, writing documents, getting laid off, things like that - not exactly glamorous, which makes me think it might be a more realistic depiction of biglaw life. Thoughts?

Never seen the show, but I have talked to several biglaw partners about their families, and here are some actual but paraphrased quotes:

-It's tough to tell your kids you have to leave for Argentina next week when you just got back from 4 weeks in Asia.

-I used to call my kids in the afternoon from my office, and we'd do homework over the phone. Then I'd call again at bedtime.

-I would like to have taught my kids (native language), but when I only get to see them for 30 minutes a day, I really want to have a conversation with them in a language they understand, not spend it trying to teach (language).

-Skype helps. A lot.

-Sometimes I take a copy of their bedtime books with me, so that I can read it to them over the phone.

Never seen the show but that sounds about right. Biglaw associates research and write and record billables. One forty year old partner I spoke with has done two trials in his entire life.

You don't do that stuff for the thrill or for enjoyment. You do it for the $$$. Gotta decide what is important to you.
