Sorry, but this adds absolutely nothing ... the title of the thread is "1L job offers for the summer 2010" and not "Job prospects for HYS URM who are 'working on something.'"

fixed! :)

1L at Top 10. Applied to 10 jobs. 6 interviews, 6 offers. All jobs were UN or other well-known international organizations. Was never asked about grades, so I considered them irrelevant.

T30 school. Just received my first offer (at a nonprofit in NYC), conditional on physical space, since they may be moving offices. So excited, and I really hope this comes through. The attorneys there are wonderful, and I want to be more involved this summer. I felt really honored that they wanted me, when they already had the number of people they usually hire. I know they got a ton of T14 applicants.

EDIT: Will post this under my real name once I get it confirmed. I was all but convinced I would never get anything at all-- even unpaid nonprofit jobs are hard to come by this summer, especially here. Those of my classmates who applied before finals were wise. Also note: none of the nonprofits even asked me for my transcript, though my GPA is on the resume I sent.

Anonymous User wrote:I have the following offers in hand: SEC Summer Honors Program (pay unknown / possibly unpaid) v. NALP 250 HQ'd in the regional market that I grew up in (pay = $20K over 10 weeks).

I am very interested in pursuing a career in transactional work / securities law. The firm job would very likely result in an offer to return for my 2L summer. However, come OCI, the only way that I would consider taking a job from a firm in to the city where I grew up is if I struck out with firms in NY, Chicago, or LA. Thoughts?

Based on some discussions that I have had, it is my understanding that the SEC Summer Honors Program will pay this year. I believe that there were a few folks last year who received unpaid offers very late in the cycle to work in DC.

With that said, I would take the SEC. I think that the experience at the SEC, especially if you have a chance to work in a smaller regional office, will be more valuable than a firm job when it comes it comes to recruiting with the V100's.

I've heard that the NY SEC honors program will pay this year. From a friend that interviewed with them.

Excuse my lack of knowing but are these "summer jobs" paid positions?

Some are (see firm jobs, SEC, etc), but the majority are not.

1L at MVP, top 20% grades (3.6). At USAO in a major city where I plan to practice after law school. My interviewer said she was mainly interested in me because of my work experience (3 years in politics/government) and offered me the job after my grades came out and I sent them in as an update.

I feel like work experience, which to my dismay didn't count for much in the admissions process, is a much more significant factor for jobs. For obvious reasons but I realize now it's demonstrably true...

~3.9 at T6, not URM. 1 V50 and 2 USAO offers. Had 10 firm interviews (some were hustled, others were through OCI), only got 1 offer - through UG connection. Accepted one of the USAO's.

I am grateful for the options I had, but honestly, with one of the highest GPA's in my class and real world experience, I thought I would get more firm offers. I don't think I am terrible at interviews, either.

I am top 5% at a well-regarded private regional school near a tough market. I am trying to decide between:
- public interest policy work for an environmental group
- in-house at an architecture firm
- city department of public works-ish (they handle urban planning, easements, historic preservations, etc. for the metro area)

I can't decide, and have about 8 days left before I have to commit to the first one. None are paid, of course, but I can get a few hours' credit through a school program.

1L firm offers don't seem to correlate that strongly with grades, from my limited experience.

Has anyone else heard from the SEC? So far, I am aware of offers in Salt Lake and Los Angeles. It's been over a month since my D.C. interview. So far, I haven't received any correspondence, but I do know of a few folks that interviewed and rejection letters.

Well I'm 1st in my class at W&L, sadly, and I'll be interning for a Third Circuit judge this summer. Learning all about fun ways to tell tortured Chinese people, "sorry, but we have to deport you" (a ton of the COAs' caseload is immigration - I think they have mandatory review of stuff appealed from ILJs - and they nearly always seem to affirm the ILJ, and I'm told I'll mostly be working on the easier cases as I am only a 1L at a school where they don't bother to teach you Con Law until your second year).

1L at T10, with school that doesn't rank or calculate GPAs. 6 interviews - 1 with firm in person, 1 with firm via telephone, 3 gov't agencies, and 1 non-profit direct services center. No callback from the in person firm interview. Haven't heard back from the telephone interview, although I doubt anything will come of it b/c I have no ties to the area whatsoever, and that was a major line of questioning in the interview. 3 offers from the gov't agencies (paid) and 1 from non-profit (unpaid). Accepted one gov't paid spot.

Only 4 schools in the top 10 don't give grades, and 3 of them tend to be referred to as 'HYS' or 'T3' rather than 'T10'.

I primarily did my job search through the NYU PILC fair. Was contacted for 4 interviews after table talk, all with nonprofits and government agencies. Got and accepted an offer from a paid government agency.

1L MVP - median grades

9 district judicial internship edny/sdny interview - 2 offers

2 DOJ interview - 1 offer

3 nyc firm interview - didn't interview after accepting DOJ.

All the interviewers were so sweet, was this everyone else's experience?

The Boalt dude/girl was really cool, actually. Usually someone would say t6 and be at the 6th ranked school. Top 10 showed some humility, although the no grade reference might have been an underhanded way to brag.....

My offer is finally official! I'm so happy! I'll be splitting my summer; first part at a wonderful nonprofit in NYC, second part in Oxford, just as I had hoped.

My job search: Sent out about 25 resumes. Two interviews. (I don't look all that great on paper yet, but I am working on it. I didn't have a GPA until fairly late in my application cycle, so it was not on most of these resumes.) I know I should have started looking much earlier, but everything worked out in the end, and I feel profoundly lucky to have this. I wondered if I would ever get to officially post in this thread.
