Hello...I was just wondering if its appropriate to call a firm and ask if they are hiring summer 1Ls? Thanks!

Definitely appropriate. I would suggest emailing the hiring partner or the recruiter (if they have one).

Personally, I would not call. Furthermore, I believe that it would be inappropriate to walk into the office and ask in person. You are starting to sound desperate!!! It is also a little late in the process for some firms.

I would start by reviewing Martindale, NALP, and each individual firm's career page. If a firm hired no 1L's in the past, then it's a very safe bet that they are not going to hire any this year ... so don't apply! Where a firm has historically hired 1L's, start by contacting the hiring attorney or recruiting manager (depending on the firm) with both a cover letter and resume attached. Many firm's a still in limbo with respect to their 1L hiring.

The firm has 140 attorneys (between all offices) but the office near me is a smaller office with only 4 attorneys

It would probably be better to email the recruiter at the main office. I'd be shocked if an office of a mid-sized law firm with 4 attorneys is looking to higher 1Ls ITE.

Yah, honestly you probably have no chance regardless of your credentials. However, if there are only 4 attorneys, you could go for the bold move and go in there yourself. This could only help you, as I don't see you getting the job through a resume drop.
