Hey all...

Congrats on Villanova Law! I thought I would be taking a year off and applying for law schools in 2010, but I just received scholarship information for Villanova's grad school. they offered me a lot, so I should almost definitely attend Villanova in the fall. I'm from Pittsburgh and will be potentially looking for a roommate to save costs. Feel free to PM me on here and we can talk about housing.

BTW, I'm a male and I'll be in the MA Theology program, but don't worry I'm not a huge religious nut or anything

You guys have no idea what you're getting yourselves into. There is no market whatsoever for Tier 2 grads even in a good economy. And take a look at the kind of scum who operate this diploma mill:

--LinkRemoved--

I strongly urge all of you to re-think th idea of law school. Children, make sure you read all 70 comments to the Above the Law link above. I've reprinted a few choice ones below to whey your appetites:

"As a graduating 3L at 'Nova, I can tell you that this whole thing is almost certainly because Career Services here is TERRIBLE and have done just about nothing to help 1Ls and 2Ls find jobs."

"Basically, here at Villanova, Career Services helps law review kids get jobs and, once that's done, just washes their hands of everyone else."

"thankfully transferred after my first year to upennstate. the career services and deans were completely worthless. basically, the whole "on campus" recruiting thing is a joke. they know that big law firms are really only looking for the top of the top of the class but they force the firms to interview at least 10 students just to get access to the ones they really only care about, which is a complete waste of time for the other nine and inflates their numbers for recruiting purposes. plus, if you indicate that you are going to transfer, they treat you like shit. the only thing that I am glad for is that villanova is cheaper than upennstate, so i saved about 20k in student loans...and thats about it."

I hate to break it to you guys, but if you miss Top 5% (in this economy) at a Tier 2 like 'Nova, your job prospects are abysmal. I went to Seton Hall, a comprable toilet school, and the harsh reality of this business is going to hit you like a baseball bat to the teeth. Please don't go to law school. If 'Nova was the best you could do, take that as a sign that you really aren't cut out for this industry. It sounds harsh, but in three short years you'll all learn the hard way that what I'm saying is 100% true.

Don't take my word for it. Go on lawjobs.com. Emplawyernet.com. lawcrossing.com. craigslist. Take a look at the number of entry level law jobs out there. It's almost zero. and the few that you'll find offer sub-poverty level wages doing gutter work like traffic court or insurance defense. Spend some time reading jdunderground, abovethelaw.com, http://temporaryattorney.blogspot.com/.

These people aren't "losers." We were all in your position just a few short years ago: cocky, excited, and totally dismissive of the warnings from people who's already been down the legal highway. This is no joke. Do some research on the job market and ask yourself if you could pay back 500-700 a month on a 40 K salary, because that's likely the best you'll get out of a diploma mill like 'Nova.

You need to chill out and manifest your insecurities elsewhere. Villanova is a fine school and the legal profession is not one that is only feasible to top law school graduates. Every career choice has its inherent risks and disincentives; this is the natural course with most decisions in life. The career services, deans, [whomever] may not be particularly helpful but wa wa wa? Any student who is willing to seek out help, be proactive, dillligent, and passionate will find success if the legal field is something they really want to pursue. Instead of posting here, seek a psychologist instead of imposing your insecurities, whatever they may be, on future lawyers on this site.

So it's true they aren't helpful? I'd like to know more about this.

I think what NovaLaw is trying to say is that you can't expect to handed jobs left and right. Regardless of the law school one attends or even your profession, you must be take initiative and put effort into finding a job. I'm sure Villanova's career services are more than adequate.

NovaLaw--I'm a jogger and NEED to go for a jog once a day. Is the area around Villanova good for jogging or do most people jog on campus?

I'm in the facebook group (VLS Class 2012)... I kind of wish there was a non Nova-controlled fbook group as well... I mean, the admins of the group are people from admissions office etc. I'd also like a group for students run by students, you know?

i got an apartment!

i know it's still early, but i had a pretty good idea of what i was looking and where i wanted to be, so when i found a place that met my needs, i decided to go for it. i'm gonna be living a few train stops closer to the city than villanova, in a one-bedroom for well under $1000/month including utilities. i know it could have been considerably cheaper to have roommates, but i decided my sanity was worth the money--i was also an RA for the last 2 years of UG to save money, so i'm making myself happy with my living situation this time, instead of sacrificing in the name of economy.

anyhoo, it's a pretty sweet place and i can't wait to have a little social gathering with my new law school friends. hope everyone is as excited (scared?!) as i am for this fall!

Villanova's +7 jump in the rankings has made me SO happy that I chose it over Temple. I was still a little weary. Hope that the new building will make it jump more in the rankings.

I was very excited to see their jump. Honestly, up +7 this year and with with the new building and curriculum changes, I wonder where 'Nova will be when we're 3Ls.

Haha, +1! I think it's the University of Pennsylvania's commuter campus at University Park. It's definitely one of the schools to watch closely the next few years. VERY up and coming!

alibaba--where are you living? Can you PM me? I'm considering living alone now and haven't found anything under $1000.

I wish there were some way to get across to you guys the depth of the mistake you're making. The debt will destroy the rest of your adult life. The job market for lawyers outside the Top 14 is comically abysmal. Look at this ad:

--LinkRemoved--

This is sadly typical of what you can expect from a TTT school like Nova, even in a good economy. My hunch is that most of you will fail to find work altogether. Open your local phone book and count the hordes of rinky-dink shitlaw lawyers begging for traffic ticket cases and trip n' falls. Law is a dying industry. Spend some time on jdunderground and get an idea of what you're jumping into.

BTW did you guys catch this about your dean on ATL?:

It's a shame that you're all about to flush 3 years down the sewer at this comical toilet of a "school." Trust me, there are no jobs out there. In three years you're all going to look back on this thread and wish to God you'd listened to me. How many of you have ever even worked in a law office? How can you be so positive that you'll like a miserable, tedious, boring, makework paper churning joke of a job that pays abysmal wages?

It's no use. You'll all go, most will miss top 10%, and you'll be scrounging craigslist for some 35 K gutter job and posting on JDU all day warning the next generation of suckers to stay the hell away from this comical farce of a "career."

Show me where you found that craiglist is a common search tool for new attorneys seeking work. I already told you 80% of job seekers get their jobs through NETWORKING. Why do you continue insisting that it's common for attorneys to find jobs on craigslist? Why do you insist that the kinds of shitty attorney jobs posted on craigslist are common for the legal industry? In fact, I would argue that these job listings are for the truly desperate only, and should not be used to make generalizations about all T2-T4 job prospects.

Since we know 80% of job seekers do NOT use craigslist to get work (source: this month's Kiplingers), why continue posting them as if it's something EVERYONE will have to do?

Because I am a TTT grad myself and have been an attorney for 4 years. These jobs are not only "common," they are the norm for the non-Top 5% at diploma mills like 'Nova. You're going to find all this out for yourself in a couple of years, and wish you'd listened to me.

It is so sad watching you guys make this mistake. Its like a car accident- hard to look at and hard to look away from. You can't begin to imagine how grim your prospects at a job are going to be coming out of a Tier 2.

The thing is, its hard to even land one of these 40 K gutter jobs. My first job paid 45 K and when I left they got over 115 resumes for the gig! Why not talk to some 2nd and 3rd years at 'Nova that aren't puppets for the school's propoganda machine. I can guarantee you won't like what you hear.
