Did anyone drive to the Harvard ASW and receive a travel subsidy? I applied for one (letting them know I was driving) and was approved, but on the approval email they said they would need all receipts before I leave the school. Since I am driving I'll only have the receipts from the trip up to Cambridge, not the trip back. I assumed, they would just figure this according to the mileage, but the email did not seem to indicate. Can someone confirm whether they use mileage or actual gas receipts and (if it's the latter) what you did about receipts for the trip home? Thanks!!!
I forgot my flight receipt, so I just forwarded it to them when I got home. I'd scan the receipts in and mail them to them. Or for me, I just tried to prove I spent more than the $75 they were reimbursing me for.

Frenchie, what was it about the school that turned you off?

Also, did anybody do any apartment hunting?

Man, I am so excited about this school. After the ASW I decided I was 100% sold and then my dad called telling me that I had a small, thin envelope from Yale. The stars have aligned and its on like donkey kong. Who else is totally on board?

Hi,

Well, the school itself was great. Some minor soft factors worry me.

Size is a big deal. HLS calls itself the NY of law schools but I live in much smaller town than NY and I like it that way. I like that there are like six degrees of separation here which is great for networking/getting involved in the community. I like having at least a core group of friends that I can be close to, even if I have tons of acquaintances. I'm a little concerned that I'll just end up having acquaintances if the class is huge. I'm a little worried that the profs will be inaccessible.

Also, there's location. I want to either come back straight here after law school or work in S.F. biglaw a few years before coming back which means I'll at least do my 2L summer in CA. I would do it if I had to but my husband will have to spend 10-12 weeks by himself in Boston (our families are on the West Coast, Europe and Africa, not near Boston). It's not the end of the world and I would do it if I had to, but it sure sucks. I do not (yet) have the luxury of having SLS as an option. Also being that we'd be on a tight budget, I'm not sure that we'd get to visit family that often unless we did the 4-day drive across the country. I'm also a tad concerned about SO finding a job, unless employers are willing to interview over the phone. So yeah, distance is crazy.

But that's just me and my crazy comfort zones :)
Ultimately, I'm sure we'd adapt to the size and settle/find a way to work with the distance thing. The school itself was absolutely impressive.

Thanks Frenchie. I appreciate your taking the time to reply. So it seems as though your reasons are more personal than having to do with the school itself.

I stopped by the law school coop on Mass Ave after the program and on the way were several apartment agencies with listings in the window. It seems like there's a lot of reasonably priced stuff near the school. Well, reasonable by some standards.

Does anyone remember the statistic for the % of upper level classes below x number of students? They told us at the ASW.

Thanks

I'm a (very) recent admit and trying to plan a last-minute trip to see the school. If anyone has a hotel recommendation from their visit that they wouldn't mind sharing, or knows of a list given out by Harvard, it'd help a ton! Thanks.

Hey Emilia.. You may or may not be able to log-in to the admitted student site here: http://www.law.harvard.edu/prospective/jd/index.html

Use the UN/PW combination of:

UN: jdoe.jd12 (first letter of first name, last name)
PW: Your LSAC Number (e.g. L80000000)

You can get all of the information I'm posting below there.

Harvard Square Inns
A Friendly Inn at Harvard Square, 1673 Cambridge Street, Cambridge 617-547-7851
Irving House & Harding House, 24 Irving Street, Cambridge 617-547-4600

Hotels within a short walking distance of Harvard Law School
The Charles Hotel, One Bennett Street, Cambridge 1-800-882-1818 (ask for Harvard rate)
Harvard Square Hotel, 110 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge 1-800-458-5886 (Harvard Reservation Office)
The Inn at Harvard, 1201 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge 1-800-458-5886 (Harvard Reservation Office)
The Sheraton Commander Hotel, 16 Garden Street, Cambridge 1-617-547-4800

Hotels within a longer walking distance or short taxi ride of Harvard Law School
Hyatt Regency Cambridge, 575 Memorial Drive, Cambridge 1-617-492-1234 (ask for Harvard Rate)
Le Meridien (formally, University Park Hotel) 20 Sidney Street, Cambridge 1-800-222-TREE or 1-617-577-0200 (ask for Harvard Rate)
Doubletree Guest Suite Hotel, 400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston 1-617-783-0090

Funnily enough, a popular hotel that isn't listed here that a lot of students stayed at was the Boston Marriott Cambridge which is only a couple of stops on the Red Line from Harvard Square. Rates seemed reasonable when I was looking for a room. Hope all of this helps.
