Well yes everyone loves it! But that's probably what makes it unsafe. VERY unsafe, it is.
What do you mean?

And here's another question: If parking in New Orleans, especially around the school, is difficult, the street cars are unreliable, and since it is apparently unsafe to walk around the city alone, how exactly do students travel within the city?
i'm a new orleans native who's lived in some other cities, and i'm happy to answer questions. (i'm also considering joining the tulane class of 2012.)

i just want to say real quick that while i'm all for caution, especially since some people will be coming to town from very different places, my opinion is that this thread's vibe is unnecessarily fear-producing. the only crime my family and i have experienced in 20+ years in the tulane neighborhood is the time my bike got stolen... because i left it unlocked in the park while i flirted with a girl. so.

to answer this particular question, i think new orleans is a good bike city, esp. for tulane students. buses and streetcars work too (i used to ride the bus to my job downtown--if you budget a few extra minutes and use the schedules, you won't have a problem). but a lot of this stuff has to do with what you're used to. if you're coming from nyc, you'll be appalled by the public transportation but pleasantly surprised by the weather/atmosphere/safety. if you're coming from someplace more rural, it might be the reverse.

by all means look at the nopd crime maps - a great tool. but if you find yourself getting freaked out, be sure to check on your current campus's crime stats (if like most people you don't do that regularly). you might be surprised... and i think you'll see that tulane students are very safe and that the crime situation is comparable to (if not better than) most any other major university campus.

edit to add: the nopd found and returned my bike.
YAY, positivity! Thanks for that insight!

I'm from DC, another city with a reasonably large amount of crime. Unfortunately adding to that is the incredibly corrupt police force whose officers enjoy harrassing law-abiding citizens at every opportunity. How is the NOPD?

Another nola native here also considering Tulane in the fall. The crime thing on this thread is definitely way out of whack. Yeh this is a fairly dangerous city, but 99.9% of people don't have any problems. This isn't Mexico. To stay away from violent crime, don't sell drugs. Period. You're a lot more likely to get beat up by being an a**hole to a cop during Carnival.
Also, I don't know why the earlier poster was dissing Craigslist. I love our local Craigslist and use it for everything, including housing. But when you visit, definitely talk to some students because they have the connections for some excellent deals.
As for hotels, we got a million good ones to choose from. Way too many options. I can't imagine you'll spend much time there, however. At least you better not IMO. If you don't expect to do some partying while you're here, I question your reason for choosing Tulane. We like to party here way more than you are used to--I guarantee it. Which could be problematic for 1L.

As a current Tulane UG, i also feel the need to make a post about the "rampant crime" being reported in this thread. I've lived here for four years now, on and off-campus, and have never had a single issue. It's all about being smart - i.e., locking your doors at night and not walking around alone after dark. Like others have said, the majority of crimes are drug-related and occur in other parts of town. That being said, New Orleans has been an amazing place to go to school and I have no doubt that whoever ends up at Tulane for law school will thoroughly enjoy their three years here. I have a million and one suggestions about places to visit, eat, live, go out, etc., so if anyone has any questions/concerns please feel free to PM me. Lastly, it's really easy to have a car here, even around campus - I live like 3 blocks away and have never had an issue parking. I would highly recommend a car, especially for things like grocery shopping, going out to eat, and running any kind of errand - it's almost a necessity.

Ditto. The activities themselves were slightly boring for me,but then again I was basically sold when I stepped off the airplane and it was 75 and sunny out, so I didn't need 8 hours of convincing. All of the people I met, both current and prospective students, were extremely nice and friendly. And, of course, I had a blast in the French Quarter friday night, even though I don't remember any of it.

Just a guesstimate, but I'd say about between 50-60 prospectives plus guests. You have reason to be excited, this school is really really cool.

wow thanks for that tip! everyone seemed to kind of discourage it or say there is no need for one so its nice to get another view. i felt the same way though, about parking lately. i stayed with a friend for asd only a couple blocks from campus and it seemed like parking was fine. :)

I might go to Tulane this summer. The 25k scholarship is really tempting, considering this economy. And the city looks awesome. The bohemian artist in me is getting all vibes.

hahaha, its just.... all the people, like you said, who are writing about tulane, are writing about their "eternally eligible" status in the other thread. but i agree, more conversation should be made amongst us definite tulanians. after all we will be seeing plenty of each other in a few short months!
