I registered in Santa Barbara when I lived there, and I guess I must have re-registered when I moved back up to Palo Alto in order to vote in the Presidential election.. so that would be a new registration card, right?

Umm...what residency application are you talking about? Do you mean the CA residency one?

For those of you who have already submitted your financial aid papers: has UCH given you any kind of notice? I checked with BofA, who is doing my Stafford loans, a few weeks ago and they said that they had received everything they needed and it was now between them and UCH. I thought UCH might at least give us some kind of notice...

Has anyone tried calling? I'm thinking about doing it.

(I didn't have to deal with loans in undergrad so all of this is entirely new to me. Sorry if I sound clueless.)

to get a copy of your voter registration card, call the office on this list for your county and confirm that you're registered. then ask them how to get a copy. they'll probably tell you to write a letter to the register recorder at their address and send a check for $1.50

http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_d.htm

What about the proof that we voted in recent elections?

I didn't realize we needed that! Seems sort of impossible to me. The other annoying part is where you have to list your job for the past 6 years which is a ridiculously long time. I've worked about 10 jobs in 6 years and they give you 3 crappy little lines.

Thanks for the info on the reg. card!

It's not impossible. I talked to the Alameda Co. people...they said they can give a printout of your voting history.

I have to travel to the Alameda Superior Court to get all of these documents though

i just came back from the court house....FINALLY! i better not see any more forms from hastings...my welt for the TB thing has not died down yet...oh, hastings, the things you make me do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just called them and they said they'd be certifying the loans (i.e., getting them ready and sending to us) around mid-June. Makes sense since our due date for the first payments and such is the end of July. I'd double-check with your bank to make sure everything's in order, though.

Hey all:

Studying abroad for a few months in the past year shouldn't jeopardize my CA residency, right? I've maintained my home in CA as my permanent residence, haven't changed voting anything, and so on. I can't imagine spending a few months out of the country after living in CA for 15 years would be a problem...or would it?

Correct? Since I've lived in CA my whole life, do you guys think I still need to do it?

I don't see anything about voting history anywhere...

i'm not an expert on this, but i highly doubt it. seems to me that you were only temporarily out of california and you still had the bona fide intention to treat california as your permanent residence. kind of like going on a vacation.

nope no way. but go ahead and call the res office at the school anyways if you're unsure. just don't do anything drastic there that would affect residency (all examples are too silly to even mention). have fun!!

Yeah, I just double-checked and it seems like temporarily leaving the country (i.e., for a few months) while retaining your CA residence as your primary residence is all that matters. Plus, I studied abroad during UG and it definitely didn't affect my CA residency. I just didn't even think it could possibly be an issue until reading through the UCH residency application.

Has anyone applied and received a residency determination yet?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that they try to turn around decisions within 7 days of receipt.

I sent in my residency application about 2 weeks ago, and it only just showed up on my web-advisor yesterday. Also, I haven't recieved any sort of notification about whether or not it was "accepted" or whether my residency claim is legit. I'm a CA lifer though, so I'm not too worried.

I got an "urgent reminder" email today about the residency forms. I sent them in about 2 weeks ago. So I freaked out, and called, and they told me I was approved over the phone, and they didn't know why I got the email. I haven't checked web advisor yet, so I'm not sure if it's shown up there or not.

Haha - yeah, the 'urgent reminder' freaked me out as well!

Speaking of freaking out, is anyone freaking out over this yet???

Do you guys think a private, "non-UC" Hastings @ 40k+ tuition would be worth it?

Hastings will surely drop in the rankings if this happens, if from nothing else than the cut in expenditures per student. I am pretty sure that low EPS is what caused them to drop behind Davis this year in the rankings.

A non-UC, private tuition will NOT make Hastings worth it. Super annoying that this proposal comes less than 3 months before school is set to start.

What else worries me is that Dean Newton is pretty much done at Hastings and shipping off to Notre Dame. A situation like this is what Deans are for, isn't it???
