is anybody looking to live within walking distance?

I know I am...I thought about bringing a car up, but I'd prefer not to have to deal with the gas expense. Walking/riding a bike is more than sufficient.

I'm in the same boat, although I heard groceries can be a hassle. Do you know of any apartment buildings that would be within that distance?

Smith Apartments 384-1925 http://www.smithapartments-cu.com
2 bedrooms in Champaign: 58 E. Armory $810; 1004 S. Locust $710-$795

Fighting Illini suggested this one^^

I think most of them are 2BR, so they're cheap if you split it with someone...it's about a 10 minute walk from the law school.

Although I have recently decided to attend a school rather than Illinois, I feel that I have to tell all you guys that it is really not that bad of a place to live for a few years. I am currently a senior here at UIUC, and it is really a fine place to live for a while. It gets a bad rap sometimes. There is basically everything to do that anyone our age (~22-30?) would have the needs, or means, to do. So don't let people tell you otherwise because Chicago is not that far away and life is cheap in central IL. Anyways, I saw some people on this thread talking about housing and I thought I would chip in, giving my inside look at the campus. So here it is...DO NOT live on any on-campus housing if you have a car. That means anything on Locust, John, Daniel, Armory, Oak, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, Chalmers, S.Lincoln, and possibly a few others I may be forgetting. It is outrageously priced for it's amenities. I recommend 88 west in Champaign or that place in Savoy that was mentioned earlier in this thread. The places on-campus are neglected to shit and completely over-priced. You will receive a much better value off-campus. Off campus housing is reasonable and fairly priced. Also, there are nice bars in downtown Champaign. Do not go to campus bars unless you are planning on getting on some 19 year old UG (because 19 yr. olds are let into bars legally in Champaign if you did not know that already). The bars in downtown Champaign serve as a better place for law students to hang out. I can't think of anything else to tell, but if you guys have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks! This certainly makes limiting options a bit easier...

Also, from the hippie in me--are there any co-ops or health food stores in C-U? I may not be able to afford the good stuff all the time, but I'll definitely splurge whenever I can...

Yes their is. It is called Strawberry Fields my friend used the place a few times last year. http://www.strawberry-fields.com/store/store.htm

Also their is another place called Common Ground. I am unsure of the location but here is the website http://www.commonground.coop/

I believe their is another one at Wright and Springfield, but I can't remember the name of it.

Illinois Law, Class of 2011 here. For those concerned about housing, proximity to campus, etc. A few things:

1. I recommend Faron properties -- they have a nice selection of apartments and rent houses in the more historical areas of Champaign. There are some good spots near downtown Champaign.

2. The bus system is pretty good, included in your student fees. Google "MTD Champaign" for exact routes.

3. To the closet hippie, there are several decent whole foods types stores, and most of the larger supermarkets have some sort of natural/whole foods sections.

I for one want to make sure we have the greatest intramural softball team in the fall. Who's with me?

I definitely want to live close also. I'll have a car, but don't feel like dealing with the hassle of parking (and want to minimize my driving in bad weather).

I'm still debating the car thing...bad weather doesn't really phase me, considering I'm in Buffalo right now. All I know is that the weather can only get better from here on out...

Does anyone know if intramural flag football is big at Illinois? I "retired" from baseball at the age of 5 (I batted around .080 in 5-pitch), but I'm definitely down to play football.

I'm sure it's there, but from what I gathered, the two biggest intramural things are softball (which is HUGE) and beer darts.

Well I currently live in Austin, and have in lived in Texas my whole life. The weather was killing me during ASD, and it was only 45 outside  . I'll probably be the guy wearing a scarf and 2 jackets in early October.

 ...I consider 45 a heatwave. It's only 39 right now and raining, and I consider that 'mild' weather!

I think we need to work on getting a kick ass team together on the first day of Orientation.

Its currently 75 degrees in Champaign, yesterday it was 50 welcome to the wild and wacky weather of the Midwest!

Can't be any crazier than Texas.... weather swings like nothing I've ever experienced before.
