I'm going to Emory next year. I visited the campus last week, and really liked it.

I can't make the ASW, so I'm missing out on this free tshirt everyone is talking about.

I plan on living in Virginia-Highlands--not sure where. The neighborhood is great.

How are people arranging their housing? Craig's List?
I will just be arriving in mid-August, so I hope I can arrange everything from abroad.

Craigslist has some decent listings, and from there you might find a link to a website that manages rental properties in local neighborhoods. VA Highlands are nice (though a bit yuppie, whatever), Inman Park is a bit funkier (yet similar) and the Poncey-Highlands straddles the two and therefore is a like a mix of funky-yuppie (and is within walking distance of the Claremont Lounge). Heading in the direction toward Emory, I would also look into Candler Park, Lake Claire or Decatur for more rental options. I have lived in most of these hoods and they all have their perks.

ALSO, check the classifieds in the Atlanta edition of Creative Loafing. http://www.creativeloafing.com
It will be more difficult to secure housing while abroad (I always had the best luck just driving through desirable neighborhoods and finding For Rent signs) but it is certainly doable.

P.S. MHP has happily withdrawn from the T14s and is headed to EMORY next fall. Whoo-hooo!

Anyone heard anything about the new building, Campus Crossing at Briarcliff? Is the construction on schedule? Are any current law students planning on living there next yar?

I visited a few weeks ago and it was still under construction, but I am living there next year! It seems really nice and reasonably priced, plus the shuttle line that runs there from campus looks like it goes directly to the law school.

I just came back from a visit to Emory and Campus Crossing this past weekend. The apartments look really nice. (I toured several 2 br/2bath floor plans.) And it comes furnished, with washer/dryer in room, which is a big plus. They also offer parking in a covered garage for $50 per month, as well as shuttle service to campus. It's also not that far from the law school - about a 15-20 minute walk/2-5 minute drive. If I finally decide(!), then I'm definitely living here too! :D

That sounds great. I'll definitely be living there if I decide to go to Emory!

If you need tips on housing (drive times, crime, locations, etc.) post up. If you are looking to get a little cashback on your rent, PM me. I may be able to get a deal for you at a certain apartment complex (don't want to post it in public forum).

Sorry man, not familiar with this forum. Although on other forums, it is considered polite to tell someone when you have responded to a PM.

Back on topic.

I was accepted with no $$. I really would like to attend, the alternative being Florida State with in-state tuition, but I don't know if the debt is worth it. Was wondering if anyone has heard anything regarding debt repayment assistance or something else of the sort.
Thanks for your help.

Is a car a necessity? I am content if I find living quarters withing a 45 min. walk. Do I have many options?

I think a car is a necessity. Though you might be willing to walk to Emory from 45 minutes away, Atlanta is not known for being a pedestrian city (Briarcliff, for example, does not have continuous sidewalks and this is one of the main thoroughfares to campus). Really, the problem is that in order to access other parts of Atlanta's sprawl (entertainment, restaurants, bars, friends), you won't have any option. Public transport is lacking.

That said, I definitely had some friends that for one reason or another went without a car for a few years. It was fairly rough on them and on those around them (those supplying the much needed rides, that is). Don't get me wrong-- I think being carless is a fantastic thing. If you believe you can do it, try it out. Atlanta just might be one of the most difficult cities to do this in, that's all.

Hopefully I can get by for first year. I mean, ideally I will restrict myself to campus for most of the week. For entertainment I hope gas fare will suffice....

Do most students really invest in a car? I am still overwhelmed by the financial aid info that I see. 65k even minus a significant scholarship is still over 100k in debt. I can only assume that a car will increase the damage...

Ig, I won't have a car either. I've been warned it's not feasible but I can't afford it. So maybe we'll see each other on the sidewalk ... or shuttle :)

Right now I'm thinking about Campus Crossings @ Briarcliff because of the convenience. Ideally, I'd like to find a cheaper room to rent in a shared house with other students. However, I won't be able to come down to ATL to look at places so it's prolly gonna be Briarcliff.
