I'm also visiting on the ASW. I'd like to see the area and visit the school.

I know this will sound weird, but I've known a couple people who didn't go to Emory because they heard that it was a really nasty-competitive environment. Does anybody know if that's a myth or true?

I'm pretty sure I will be attending this fall, visited last week and loveddd the campus and Atlanta. From everything I've read the nasty-competitive environment seems to be just a rumor left over from years ago. I definitely didn't get that vibe when I was there.

I'm going to ASW April 4th, looking forward to getting my Emory T-Shirt. I have finally decided on Emory, so see some of you in the fall!

Know of any cheap/good hotels? I think I'm going to the ASW alone and am in a bit of a money-crunch, so if anyone wants to share a room to halve the cost, let me know.

Also, anyone think its a good idea to visit Emory on a weekend other than the ASW just to save some $$ and perhaps drag a friend along to explore the city? What benefit would I get at the ASW that I couldn't get during a visit at some other time?

that's my plan.. their ASW seems weak... i'd rather get the unadulterated look than the propaganda

I meant I would go down and visit on a Friday, maybe sit in on a class. I don't think they have official tours o anything on weekends but I'm thinking they could get a student to volunteer an hour or so to give a tour? Otherwise a self-guided tour wouldn't be a bad option.

In looking at the ASD invitation, why is the night event a reception for honoring the "accepted members of the class of 2011"?

Isn't that last years class? Is this a typo?

I'm debating whether or not to go to the night event.

I'm going the last weekend in March. ASW's can be nice and all, but I really want to see what Emory's like on a typical Friday/weekend. Will take pics and report back :D

I got a private tour of the campus by one of the professors a couple weeks ago (friend of a friend) and I got to take a look at things with a solid rundown. I was very impressed with the facilities. I'm accepted and 90% confident I will attend (the free t-shirt might boost me to 95% :D ). I feel like my tour gave me a very realistic look and the professor didn't sugar-coat anything for me, but it's definately worth going to see before ASW. There's not a lot of exploring the city to be done as Emory is in a very upscale area just on the fringe of Atlanta, but the campus is gorgeous.

That's awesome! I'm about 95% decided on Emory, too. What other schools are you considering? And what did you like/dislike the most?

I'm considering Boston U and UGA and still waiting to hear back from Vandy and Cornell. In terms of the best parts about Emory are the location, facilities, and very strong programs available. Obviously I'm not too keen on the huge sticker price and their slight religious affiliation makes me uneasy (though I'm told Emory often goes out of its way to avoid being too strongly associated with its Methodist past). Law and Religion programs, International public law, Feminist law, and many others are some of the strongest in the region. Good reputation with Big Law 250 as well. The only thing I was a little disappointed with was the weak history in judicial clerkships. I asked the professor that gave me a tour about it and he said most of the students aren't interested in judicial clerkships at graduation because most are deeply in debt and not willing to take another vow of poverty for a year.

you should have nothing to worry about. despite its methodist origins, the school is probably the most liberal university in the southeast and one of the most liberal in the country.

Oh wow thanks! Yes, just to echo the statement above, I've had many friends go through Emory (of varying religious dispositions), and I've never heard any complaint about Emory's religious affiliation. I doubt many even were aware of it :D

Did you get to meet any students? What was your overall impression of the student body?

I went to Emory ug and believe me you would not notice it had any religious affiliation. The largest represented religion is probably Judaism (I am Jewish myself). I believe Jewish students make up close to 40% of the ug population. I wouldn't worry about religious affiliation.

student population, professors, official university stances on certain things, etc etc

let's just say you'd be hard pressed to find a McCain sticker or "W" sticker in any of the parking lots

Wow - it sounds like just about everyone who's been to Emory has been really impressed. I like what I'm hearing, and I may end up in the class of 2012. :D

Yup, I'm getting the same impression! :D

I just got back from a visit to BU this week, and the weather sucked and the facilities were far less than impressive, so I'm hoping my visit to Emory seals the deal.

Well, we're in a drought right now, so you probably won't need to worry about bad weather (though we did have a freak snow storm a few weeks ago).

I'm in the same boat. I'm 95% right now, but I'm still considering other offers. Hopefully, the ASD will seal the deal. I'll be in Atlanta Thurs-Sunday if anyone wants to socialize/explore the town a bit.

I've finally decided on Emory 100%. Can't make it to ASW though. :(
