Hey Squints since you went to UCLA for undergrad, do you have any advice on finding an apartment near UCLA? I plan on doing some apartment hunting when I come down for ASW. Something not too expensive (under 1500 for a 1BR), close to campus or close to a bus line, next to some shops and restaurants. I've already discovered that the west side of campus is host to most of the undergrads and since the law school is on the east side of campus, I think I'll try to avoid those apartments. I know about south of Wilshire and Brentwood. Any other areas to consider or general advice for apartment hunting?

I would avoid the North Village (west of campus), because it's loaded with undergrads, frats, congestion and overpriced apts. But their aren't any apts on the law school side -- only the Playboy Mansion and other ridiculously expensive homes.

South of Wilshire is good.

If you are going to bother going farther away from campus, I'm more a fan of Sherman Oaks than Brentwood. SO in the foothills of the Valley, about a 15-minute drive from campus, and you can get a one-bedroom for under $1200.

As of now, I will be joining you all in the fall! :) I'm really glad I finally found a place that I feel good about. Big move for me and sincerely hoping I can get Weyburn. I was told at the ASD on Sunday that out-of-staters can request special preference because we can't really visit and check out apartments. (Or at least I can't, coming all the way from Cleveland!) I feel like I don't know anyone from TLS going to UCLA next year. :|

Hey all! I put my deposit down as well. I will be seeing you all this fall, and probably going for the Weyburn Apts as well. Looking forward to the year and meeting all of you....well just the cool ones of the lot ;-) Congrats to everyone on a grueling cycle.

Hey everyone - I'm in the same boat as ecclaw. Excited about UCLA but with the possibility of being a traitor. Does anyone know about the deposit structure at Weyburn? Seems like it's the place to be but I don't want to lose my shirt if I decide to go elsewhere late in the summer.

Hey all, am I allowed to post here even though I haven't been accepted to UCLA (yet?). I am wondering how long it took the non ED people to hear back from them. I applied 12/31 and haven't heard anything. I have been accepted to the T10s I applied to so I know my numbers are strong, but I really had my eye on moving back to my hometown for law school. Are my chances slim to none? (I was also expecting at least a little bit of money from them.. think they are still handing out scholarships?)

Hey hey, I'm filling out my housing stuff now, and was wondering...Does anyone know when an out of stater needs to move to CA in time to be considered a resident for next year? I'll call the Registrar if not, but just thought I'd see if anyone else has the answer first. :) Thanks!

I think being in the state a year is the key. I'd assume a year from the start of school is fine. I know it's important to stay foe the summer, register to vote, switch drivers license, etc.

Wait was just reading over this myself. I think this paragraph sort of answers your question.

"Students who have not been living in California with intent to make it their permanent home for more than one year immediately before the residence determination date for each term in which they propose to attend the University must pay a nonresident tuition fee in addition to all other fees (see Fees for the term in question)."

Except we still don't know what UCLA views as the residence determination date. I assume wouldn't put it before 1L orientation, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to contact the registrar and ask. Let me know if you do.

Traitor!? Oh noes! Pick UCLA!!

I just got my housing offer from Weyburn today (got a studio! yay!) and it looks like they require a $500 deposit before move-in which will later be deducted from rent.

Haha well I deposited already so either way I'm supporting the cause. When is the deposit due?

edit: I mean "When is the housing deposit due?"

May 19th

After finally getting my decision back, it feels like everything is moving so quickly! It's pretty crazy to realize I'll be moved into Weyburn in less than 8 weeks.

There's a link on the left for the housing application.

I'm moving in on the first of August, and I'm in one of the two person townhouses. It's so soon!
