Ok. They're weren't the kind Obama would have offered the Queen of England, but they were tasty--like an awesome, homecooked meal.

Wow, two takers already. I have a feeling this is going to overtake the trip to Penn Station as the most dramatic thread on TLS. We just need Esc to start bad mouthing the chocolate more and we’ll have enough angles to make this fly. I’ll even throw in the decal, since I picked up a similar one when I visited.

Opera, I should mention I'm partial to f0b, since he's deferring and got the chocolate screw-job.

Oh come on let's be fair, Chuck can't take all the credit. I'm sure a certain ex-President has a say in this too. But on the bright side, at least he was rejected from UT law

Bush may not have been a UT Law grad, but there is a certain potential Supreme Court nominee that graduated from UT Law!!! Anyone else as excited at that prospect as I am????

Seriously? That'd be amazing! I am in full support of anything that gives us better odds of better clerkships. Anything. Also, it's just generally cool that a UT grad will be on the court.

My understanding is that Judge Diane Wood from the 7th Circuit is being considered by Obama for the SCOTUS slot. Wiki says she's Class of '72.

But yeah, think of what that'd do for the school and for SCOTUS clerkships!

But Obama hasn't announced any nominees yet.

True. I meant to say that she's heavily cited as a potential nominee. Wiki (scientific as it is) shows Sotomayor as the only potential nominee with more media citations as such.

The entire UT Law administration would cream in their pants if Diane Wood gets the nod. It would be a huge feather in the Law School's cap, and although I think this would help the school's prestige and indirectly contribute to increased opportunities of all kinds for UT Law grads, I don't think it would have a direct, immediate effect on our clerkship opportunities.

SCOTUS judges hire clerks exclusively (as far as I know) from law graduates who have clerked on the Court of Appeals, and usually from those who have clerked for some of the "feeder judges" on the most prestigious circuits. Thus, before UT will obtain more SCOTUS clerkships, it must first become more competitive at placing its graduates with feeder judges. Scott Keller '07, currently clerking for Kennedy, previously clerked for Kozinski, the Chief Justice of the 9th Circuit and a noted feeder judge.

UT needs to continue to aggressively expand its clerkship program and attempt to increase its graduates' presence on the Federal Courts of Appeals. The overwhelming majority of UT CoA clerks work on the 5th circuit; this is not a bad thing, but the school needs a larger presence on other circuits as well, in particular on the prestigious 9th, 7th, 2nd, and D.C. circuits, before we will see any significant increase in SCOTUS clerks. At this point in time, Scott Keller (who, incidentally, was ranked #2 in his class year) is the exception to the rule.

If Wood gets the nomination, the prestige boost would certainly help grow UT's reputation and might make getting feeder clerkships a bit easier, but in the end, it is up to us to kick ass, aggressively seek out prestigious clerkships, and grow our school's rep

Is it bad that I am in no way interested in clerking? What the hell does a judicial clerk do?

Wiki is our friend! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judicial_clerk

A law clerk or a judicial clerk is a person who provides assistance to a judge in researching issues before the court and in writing opinions. Law clerks are not court clerks or courtroom deputies, who are administrative staff for the court.

Most law clerks are recent law school graduates who were at the very top of their class and graduated from the most prestigious law schools.[1] Various studies have shown clerks to be influential in the formation of case law through their influence on judges' decisions. Working as a law clerk generally opens up career opportunities.

If you don't want to clerk, we won't force you to.
