Re: NYU 2012
I may just be really dense or burnt out this morning, but I can't find where on the housing website it says how much the dorms cost, can anyone help me out with this?
Also, is the general consensus that finding a decent appt elsewhere in the city with one or two roommates will be either cheaper or more for the money than the dorms? If a friend of mine is looking at a job in midtown/times square area, is there anywhere that wouldn't be a bad commute for both of us? I'll probably put loan money towards my rent, but I don't she'll be able to afford rent in the village on a starting salary.

hey, i'm not sure if you have to be logged in to the admitted students site or not, but the link is: http://www.law.nyu.edu/housing/ratesand ... /index.htm
You can just click through the different buildings on the left. They make that really hard to get to!

Does anybody know if the housing costs listed on NYU's website include utilities? I know they include phone and internet, but what about gas? Thanks

From talking to the people at residence services, it sounded like the housing cost was all inclusive (i.e. electric, gas, internet, etc.).Artvark1 wrote:Does anybody know if the housing costs listed on NYU's website include utilities? Upper West would probably be ok. Straight shot down on the 1 train for both of you.elisecolette wrote:I may just be really dense or burnt out this morning, but I can't find where on the housing website it says how much the dorms cost, can anyone help me out with this?

Anyone know what to wear for ASW? I'm leaving tomorrow and have no idea what to pack.
Also can anyone who's already been give us a general idea of what to expect. Thanks!

You'll be fine as long as you don't dress like a slob. Nice jeans and a sweater/other nice top/whatever would be fine. Could go with nicer pants if you want. T-shirts probably wouldn't be a good idea.

And re: housing, I'm also really curious about this. I'm not 100% committed to NYU, but it's probably my top choice at the moment. I don't think I want to live anywhere near NYU (too crazy for me) -- I'd rather live somewhere more residential where it's not so hectic and removed from nature. I'll also be living with a SO who will either have a job somewhere in the city or be at Columbia, so I want to make sure her commute isn't terrible. Brooklyn would be nice (especially somewhere near Prospect Park or sth.), but I don't want my SO's potential commute up to Columbia to be a nightmare.
Agghhh, so overwhelming. I almost want to go somewhere like UM so I can live in a nice cheap apartment that isn't in the middle of an overcrowded city.

Anyone know when we have to commit to NYU housing and how committed we have to be? Like can you back out at the last minute? My potential roommate probably won't know about a job offer for quite a while and I'm scared I'll have to commit to living in the dorms before she knows if she's coming to the city.

Anyone know if Law Revue is really worth attending? from 8-10 PM on Thurs. night....after a decently long day seems like a bit of a hassle to go to that.

Yea... I looked at some videos from it on youtube, and it looks alright, but more of inside jokes and probably things that are funny because your friends are in them, I don't really think I want to spend my first night in the city sitting through a bunch of law school kids pretending to be performers. I'd much rather go out to dinner/drinks with some 0Ls or 1Ls.LjakW wrote:Exactly what I was thinking.espresso wrote:Anyone know if Law Revue is really worth attending? from 8-10 PM on Thurs. night....after a decently long day seems like a bit of a hassle to go to that.

Re: NYU 2012
Maybe check out the Upper West Side. Rents have dropped considerably, and continue to fall. You may have to do some searching (always the case in NYC), but there are nice places to be found. It's residential, but with a decent selection of restaurants/shops. There's green on both sides (CP, Riverside). Definitely quieter and less hectic than downtown (particularly when compared with the central Village - where NYU is). And it's a straight shot up/down the west side via subway...so, convenient for both of you if the SO is at Columbia.ezpar wrote:And re: housing, I'm also really curious about this. If your SO is at Columbia, the commute from Brooklyn will be a killer. If the SO is elsewhere in the city, I'd keep Brooklyn on the table. (I commuted from Park Slope to work in the far West Village for a while; it was totally fine.) You might also consider Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill, which are a bit closer (via the F train).

I think you can get out fairly easily, but you have to pay a fairly substantial penalty. GL!

What's up NYU 2012? Just heard back today and looks like I'm headed there unless I get off the WL at Columbia.
Time to start thinking about housing like the rest of you. I need my own space so unless I can get an efficiency or 1 bedroom I'll be looking off-campus.

We should all plan on gathering at an establishment serving some type of alcohol in a semi-awkward TLS gathering.

I agree. If your SO is at Columbia, UWS is your best bet. I live there now, and I like it. It's more residential and quieter closer to Riverside Park, like by Riverside Drive or West End Avenue, but still close to all the action on Broadway.specialist73 wrote:Maybe check out the Upper West Side. But I also agree that you should look at Brooklyn if your SO is anywhere else in the city, because the rents there are lower.

What up fellow NYU admits. I know this isn't the right place to put this post, but I wanted advice directly from my future peers. I'm trying to decide between NYU and Chicago. Every time I make a case for one and think I am set, I find equal reasons to bash it and choose the other. Why did you guys pick NYU? Convince me

I'm still waiting on Chicago but these are the main reasons I would stick with NYU unless I get a significant scholarship from Chicago:UFMike wrote:What up fellow NYU admits. 1) Location: I plan on working in NYC during the summer and not having to find a new apartment, sublet my old place, travel, and adjust to a new location is such a relief. I'm also from Northern Jersey so being close to home is a huge factor.
2) JD/MBA: You can apply to the JD/MBA program w/ Stern up through your 2nd year w/o taking the GMAT. Not something I'm absolutely set on, but a nice option.
3) Better LRAP: Chicago has a year cap out of $10k and a total cap out of $70k. NYU doesn't cap out at all. PI/Govt. work isn't something I'm totally set on, but once again a nice option.

1. I do like NYU over Chicago for the location. Hyde Park kinda blows in my opinion and I think commuting from downtown Chicago is too far (others may disagree). Manhattan has so much to offer. Coming from Berkeley I would have to move to either place.
2. I already have a PhD. This is the last degree my fiancee will let me obtain before we have kids. I think she would shoot me if I tell her I am signing on for an additional year for an MBA
3. I want to do IP litigation, which goes along with the science background. PI doesn't make sense for me.
Thanks for the insight though.

Let me try looking at this the other way around.UFMike wrote: Oh no, you gave me 3 fantastic reasons that don't help me at all!

The only reason I personally would pick Chicago over NYU is if I was dead-set on clerkships or academia, where they still have the edge. Since you're looking into IP litigation, it doesn't sound like that would matter much.
Don't know if you're looking to move back West Coast afterward, but from the little I know about IP Law the hubs seem to be NYC, DC, and Silicon Valley. NYU would be a lot closer to 2 of those than Chicago and Chicago wouldn't be close to any. I don't know much about their specific IP programs to comment at all.
Finally, both schools will give you fantastic opportunities, and I'm not trying to say Chicago is on a decline, but NYU has had an upwards trajectory in prestige/rankings/placement for more than a decade now, while Chicago has been mostly steady (admittedly there isn't much room to move up at this level) and even gone down a bit. I don't see either of them dropping out of the "CCN class" of law schools, but I really think NYU is building an amazing program. I'm not much of a law geek yet to comment on specific names, but they're poaching top faculty from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Chicago even into the recession when lots of other schools are scaling back on hiring due to smaller endowments. If I had to pick between NYU and Chicago as far as rank/prestige goes over the next decade I'd go with a decisive edge towards NYU, though I'm obviously biased.
I know you're pretty sold on the location already, but if your fiancee is going to be living with you I think she'd enjoy it a lot more in NYC over the next 3 years than in Chicago.
Finally, all the cool kids are going to end up at NYU. Don't you want to be one of the cool kids?
