It depends on how much you spend/how rough you are on your computer. Apple has great warranty service and the student discount makes it pretty cheap. But it comes with a 1 year warranty and something like %90 of all failures happen in the first year. However, if you break your comp and they won't cover the damage, the warranty is also refundable at a prorated amount.

It's a personal choice but my thinking goes: Macbooks, yes ('cause you carry them around everywhere) Desktops, no ('cause you don't).

I've had mine for almost three years and it's never had a blip, but I also take pretty good care of it and haven't dropped it, leaked water on they keyboard, etc. Macbooks typically run a good 2-3 years without any problems if you're careful. The downside is, everyone I know that has Macs, if something goes wrong with it, it's a problem that you can't fix yourself. Also, it's pretty expensive to fix. You may want to go with it for peace of mind, that way if something happens in law school, you know you can get it fixed straightaway. But at $249, it's about 25% the price of the cheapest model...

I'm thinking of doing this. I don't think my macbook's heavy, but it'll be three years old my 1L and, though I love it, I've had enough problems that I'm nervous about relying on it for schoolwork. I think I might get a light PC to use just for school stuff, and then use my macbook for play.

An alternative is to buy a warranty from someone else. I purchased coverage for my iPhone from squaretrade (http://www.squaretrade.com/) primarily b/c they give you the option to buy accidental damage insurance (e.g. fix cracked screen from dropping it) . It was much cheaper than Apple's coverage plan and covers so much more.

That said, I had a friend in college whose macbook didn't work after it slid out of his messenger bag and tumbled down a flight of stairs. He had the apple coverage and apple did cover all the repair costs. :o

I bought my Macbook a couple years back refurbished. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/s ... co=MTE3NjY

I paid $799 instead of the $1,199 I should have paid given the configuration and features. It came exactly like a new one (no scratches, all plastics and styrofoams, acessories, etc), the only difference was the box. It also comes with the same one year warranty and I could have gotten the apple care protection if I'd wanted to, but I'm a little cheap.

FYI, they have a couple of good deals on Macbook airs right now. $999 and $1099 for 1.6 and 1.8 GHz respectively. I might end up getting one of those.

i have definitely:

a) dropped my laptop from a lofted bed onto the floor.

b) sat on my laptop, thereby closing the screen down on my car keys

and unrelated to computers but not to general stupidity

c) gotten out of my car while it was still in reverse and let it roll down a hill and into another vehicle.

god help anyone within a 20 mile radius of me.
