My understanding is that Sansom's the only grad-student housing - and I guess people don't really like living there, as suggested by several posters on this forum...

I have no idea how I'll look for housing too. I don't really have time to go to Philly more than twice - once for ASW and once to look for housing - so I'm hoping I can get it all nailed down pretty easily. Prolly just going to troll Craigslist for roommate wanted ads...

As a Penn undergrad, and an aspiring Penn Law '12 student (going under review soon yay), I'd like to recommend another good living option: Being a Graduate Adviser (GA).

At Penn, essentially, being a GA is like being an RA, except you are a grad student. You get free housing in an on-campus dorm, a fair amount of free meals, and get to move into your place in July. I am an RA here and I can tell you that being an RA at Penn is nothing like at other schools. Probably .1% of the job is "busting" people, whereas it seems to be a much higher percentage at other schools. We are expected to plan and run the events in the house and on our respective floors, and generally be a resource for our students.

Penn has 11 different college houses, which vary in size from 200 to 900 students, all of which hire GA's and have a separate interview process. Probably half of them will provide you with your own bathroom and not all of them will involve freshmen.

More information can be found here: --LinkRemoved--

This is really starting to sound like an advertisement, but really.. FREE HOUSING. If you have any questions feel free to PM me

No, it's not. Fling is April 17-18 (well, that whole week really... but the main days are Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th.) ASW is March 27 and 28. But, facker is right and fling is great.

What is spring fling?

Also, does anyone know of any safe, cheap, relatively nearby hotels to stay at for ASW?

Spring Fling is a two day "festival" in the quad with vendors, games, performances, and LOTS of drinking. There is also a concert one night (last year was Ludacris... supposedly this year is Akon, but who knows). Technically it's Friday and Saturday, but there are also lots of annual events/parties starting much earlier that week. It's REALLY fun.

And I saw in another thread that someone suggested the Sofitel, which is at 17th and Sansom downtown. I don't know how affordable it is (although that post in another thread said it was?) but I know it's really nice and not too far of a walk from campus... maybe 15ish minutes. There's also a Sheraton about a 2 minute walk from the law school. Do prospective students have the opportunity to stay with current 1Ls?

From what I understand, if you are not one of the special (named) scholarships, you should hear from Penn regarding merit $ in early March.

Does anyone know when you might hear from the named ones (Wilson or Levy)? I know the essay is due 2/17, but it doesn't say how long it would take after that.

I agree- we can do better than 2 pages! Anyway, are people going to try to stay with a 1L during ASW?

I just noticed that they posted the academic calendar for next year. We don't start orientation until September 2! I can't wait that long!

Ah Penn always starts so late. Undergrad orientation is around that time too and I thought maybe law school would be earlier, but I guess not ... so sad haha

Sorry to jump in on your thread -- I don't know what the plans are for this year, but we started orientation the first week of September as well, and had a full week of "pre-orientation" before that. Basically, we went to a slew of awesome social events through the last week of August. In any case, a lot of people started getting in touch to go out with classmates even earlier than that (as soon as people started moving to Philly). So, don't worry -- you won't have to wait too, too long to join in on the Penn Law fun!

Have you seen the schedule for ASW yet? I can PM it to you if you'd like.
You'll be missing some activities, but I'm sure you'd be welcome to attend for just one day.

BTW, congrats

Yep just looked at the schedule- If I go Friday, looks like I'll at least get to do some of the social things and the mock classes- Saturday looks more like tours and stuff.

Luckily I live in MD only about an hour and a half from Philly, so I may do Friday of ASW and the preview day- which btw I wasn't able to find the date for. Anyone know?

Got my packet today, yay!

Is anyone interested in splitting a nice 4 star Marriott with me in City Center for the ASW? I pricelined it for next to nothing--250 for 3 nights.

If so, PM me. Thanks!
