Anyone know what they consider when deciding whether you get the subsidy or not? It says you have to apply to be considered...wondering if other places are like that too....

I don't know all of what they consider, but I agree that the language of their travel subsidy information makes it seem like it should be much more need-based than other schools (Harvard, Berkeley come to mind).
Yes, I definitely got that feeling too. Money is so tight right now and I'd be flying out from the west coast but I really don't know if I'd be considered "needy" enough...

I wonder if being admitted ED makes a difference on their decision for travel reimbursement? I hope not.

ccw1234 wrote:whyamidoingthis, I think you should submit for it. Especially if you're ED, you're not visiting 4 other schools, which probably has a lot to do with Columbia's concerns about need-based travel subsidies. It sounds like you have legitimate reasons.

Personally, I fall into the latter category of people they intend not to use their subsidies, so I will be buying that overpriced Amtrak ticket myself.
I'll e-mail them! I don't see why being ED should deprive me of learning all about housing, classes, and financial aid just like everybody else.

Because they already have you committed and don't need to spend $$ to sway your decision.

At least, that's the common belief that a lot of people on this board hold about applying ED. I figured the same reasoning might apply to travel expenses as well.

sure, they have me committed, but if you look at the schedule there are things that we need to know about that they'll talk about at the admit weekends. Plus, if the assistance is based on "need," it would be pretty shady to differentiate between types of applicants. It's not like they're offering assistance to people that they "really want," it's supposed to be for admitted students who state that they have need. It would make the EDers second-class citizens...

Anyone checked out the CLS 2012 blog? (which is hilariously and nerdily called Class Actions)

Just stopped by the blog......sigh. Not much there. You need to show some financial need to get a travel subsidy for AS. Still feeling on top of the world with this one.

I spoke to a friend and apparently there's a form you fill out explaining your need.

Did your friend tell you what kind of info they ask for on the form? Does it ask for parental data, too?
I graduated a semester early, so I'm still looking for a job that will keep me on just until August...haven't been so successful yet. At any rate, no job = no income, and my parents definitely won't be giving me any money toward anything law school related.

I guess it doesn't hurt to e-mail them and ask?

They will send you a form with a few questions on it. Nothing too detailed. Nothing about parents or even your own income. They just ask you to explain your situation...whatever that means to you. I sent mine in today...come on $200!!!

Has anyone heard from CLS about approving travel subsidies? I'd really like to buy my tickets before they get too expensive!

I'd very much like to visit Columbia (been admitted) but their ASDs and Mondays at Columbia don't correspond with any times where I could leave both work and school. I was thinking about coming down during my University's wonky Spring Break but there's no scheduled event then... do you think it would be possible for me to schedule an appointment with financial aid/admissions dean/take a tour (like they talk about in their packet) and apply for travel subsidies? Money is very tight but I need to see the school that will receive thousands of dollars from me before I send off a deposit.

Thoughts?

Hey, is there room for one more here? 8)

Just got my letter today. Pretty jazzed. I've had trouble picturing myself at the other schools I've gotten into- with Columbia, I saw myself there the second I opened my mailbox and pulled out my utterly mangled acceptance envelope.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
