Yo,

My mom just got a Macbook Pro and doesn't like it, and is giving it to me, which is great because I need a new laptop. But how screwed am I? Is there a verdict on whether CLS pays for Windows for us Mac users?

Thanks,

LBJ23

even if CLS doesn't pay for it... is Windows really prohibitively expensive?

...why did your mom get a $2,000 machine that she doesn't like, is my question.

Amazon has XP Pro for $239.99. At that price, its almost worth buying a Netbook just for exams, which I don't really want to do. I know my UG school had licenses for all the students, and at least we know Columbia has it for students at other schools. I'll re-email the IT department tomorrow if I still don't get anything from them.

Lol, it's just to understand the different study aids available. Doesn't mean you go buy them!

If you know what's out there you can get what you need when and if you need it....

If your comment was directed towards me talking about already having the supplements, don't worry. You know how 7-Up is the uncola? I'm the ungunner. I just figured if I had the supplements all ready to go before classes and things then I'd save some cash.

So I guess in essence I made you mistake poverty for arrogance. ;)

As for the supplements we'd be needing, I just kinda asked around. I've been doing a lot of listening to people who have already been through law school because I'm pretty scared. If you want to know what I decided to get I can talk a little bit about that. I should stress that I'm not going to even open any of them until the real courses start.

I couldn't find this anywhere on the website and haven't gotten a response from my email to IT like a week ago- does anyone know if this is true? I definitely don't want to have to pay for Windows.

I don't think we're covered for that though :?

I'm going to make a fairly useless comment here but I can tell you that at my last institution they made Microsoft operating systems available to all students and most employees at nutty cheap rates through the computer showcase or whatever. Columbia might offer something similar even if we can't get the free ones.

I was joking :P . No need to justify your ungunnerness. Any information you have on supplements would be great.

No, softtest by examsoft requires windows. You also have to use bootcamp, it's against the rules to run it in parallels or that other thingie. There's some info here: http://maclawstudents.com/blog/law-scho ... -software/

We can't download windows XP from that site I posted before, apologies.

You can get windows with a student discount wayyy cheaper than from amazon. I think it's even cheaper to buy it from Apple with your student discount than it is to get it from Amazon. http://www.macmall.com is also a fave site of mine, they're advertising XP Pro for $165.99. If you haven't bought a new comp yet and you're thinking about a mac, macmall also has had some great sales (some laptops are cheaper than Apple's student discount) and will do the XP Pro installation/drive partition with or without parallels for you. I'm just going to wait and pay a visit to IT to see if I can get XP for free, but if you're determined to do it now.....

Some other software is available for purchase to Columbia students (with steep discounts) here: --LinkRemoved--. Office 2008 is also available from the same site. Office 2008 for 50 some-odd dollars!

Hope my info is right this time :D

I've got a Stanford one with no expiration date, still gets me into their gym too. Money.

PS that thread with all the looks awful and rather tedious. Who wants to summarize for me!?

Definitely. I always assumed all schools had free OSX, XP/Vista, Office, etc...

Cornell doesn't have free anything.

Boo, my school didn't have free anything either. It was really irritating.

On another note, has anyone bothered to read Law School Confidential? I read GTM and I had decided to skip LSC, but now all those stupid threads say that it lists good supplements and stuff. Anyone read it? Looked at it?

With Westlaw, Lexis, and a printer, why do I even need casebooks at all?

you probably don't, unless you like reading the "notes" and "questions" crap.

buying a bunch of unwieldy, expensive books that will be outddated by the time I graduate just doesn't sound that great.

I was wondering the same thing myself. After my freshman year in undergrad (before I figured out what a waste most of my textbooks were) I didn't buy many of the books for my classes and my GPA wasn't really affected. Obviously the stakes are a bit higher in LS, but I'd think the professor covers what he wants you to know during lecture. Of course, I'm just a rising 1L, so if any current student has an opinion, please share your wisdom.
