This place, on the Lower East Side: http://cake-shop.com/? And Google Maps.

That sounds like fun. I'll try and make it down if I can. If anyone else is thinking of going, reply here or PM.

In other good news, I'll finally be at my apartment by then. Tomorrow I get my keys and drop off a few bags, but I won't be in the city much until Saturday.
I'll try to recruit some people.

Lenfest Residents: Is there anything you recommend I bring with me when I move in? So far I have the obvious - sheets, pillows, blanket, bathroom mat, pots, pans, dishes, cleaning supplies, etc. I move in on Thursday.

Great question!

Slippers - the AC here seems to have one setting - very cold.
Trash cans - none were included in my place.
Light bulbs - Some lamps in place had them, some didn't. CFLs save both $ and CO2.

That's all I can think of right now...

Where's a good place to buy a cheap tv/dvd set? Can't seem to find any on Best Buy's website, so worried that the store won't carry them. Thanks.

if the big box stores aren't working out, you could try j&r computer or b&h photo. (fyi: b&h is closed on saturdays.) i'm not sure what "cheap" means to you, but a quick search of j&r/b&h's respective websites does produce some tv/dvd combo results.

i don't think either store has a location anywhere near columbia, but if it's something you really want it may be worth the trip.

I just moved in yesterday, I forgot to bring an ethernet cable and wireless router.

p.s. Anyone doing an IKEA run sometime soon? I don't need furniture, just cheap silverware, kitchen towels, etc.

Apparently in Lenfest (possibly other buildings as well?) we're not allowed to put nails in the walls unless we want to plaster/repaint the rooms when we vacate (this doesn't apply if you're planning on staying for 3 years because they're required to repaint after 3 years anyway).

Anyone have any suggestions on how to hang framed posters/photos? Can you buy sticky hooks that won't pull paint off the walls?

Also, does anyone want to borrow some of my extra furniture for the year? I'm not using any of the chairs they provided, including the soft chair with the attached table. I probably won't use the second table either.

Use poster strips

Wow, waitlisted for both the UN tour and the Federal Reserve tour. Who knew Columbia was so selective even once you're in?

Yep, I'll be there. I'm looking forward to it. It'll be nice to get out of Morningside for a few hours, although I guess we're free to do that anytime we want - perhaps I'm just not particularly motivated to do so on my own volition.

Does anybody understand the whole E-Bill thing???

I am kind of lost on how to read it and what I owe and what I get of the loans....

Just want to know if anybody else is sharing my confusion -or if I am alone in my stupidity... lol

I was also confused, because my Graduate PLUS loans aren't showing up.

E-bill is kinda slow. Many, including myself, had the same issue if you look on the school forum. It seems the school did the grad plus loans after the fed, so they get updated later and will notify you of the change. The main thing is the box on top that says how much you owe, and the current account balance at the bottom which tells you what you have left for refund, meal plan, etc.

Anyone else doing the Community Service Day tomorrow? I just got my site assignment yesterday; I'm going to be helping out at a public school somewhere. Btw, anyone that hasn't signed up yet and is interested, I am guessing you could probably just show up. Here's the info:
Thank you for participating in CLS's second annual Community Service Day program. We are delighted that you will be joining us this Friday and have assigned you to the school beautification project. You will be heading over to one of 2 local public schools to garden, move and organize books, paint, and generally help prepare the buildings for incoming students.

We would like to meet and head over to the schools together. Please meet in the lobby of William & June Warren Hall (1125 Amsterdam, between 115-116th Streets) on Friday at 9:15 a.m. After distributing some light snacks, we will walk over to the subway together promptly at 9:30 . Please wear comfortable clothes that you are willing to get dirty.

After the project, we invite you to enjoy a relaxing lunch back at the Law School in Drapkin Lounge, on the 3rd floor of the main Law School building, Jerome Greene Hall.

Please be sure to bring a photo ID and Metro Card with you.

Anyone who lives in Lenfest want to hang out at some point? I'm on the 15th floor and would love to meet some other people in this building. We're paying through the teeth - we might as well make use of our "bamboo garden"

that shit behind our building doesn't even remotely resemble a "bamboo garden."

Anyone hear about the shooting on 125th St? It's an interesting case (reminds me of Bernie Goetz) and I'd bet there will be a lawsuit from at least one of the robbers' families.

I live on the 5th floor of Lenfest, so I wouldn't mind a meet up. I just arrived, so I am currently moving in and will be with my family the next couple days, but a meet up will be cool.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
