How are you liking it?
Let's just say they were much nicer than NYU.

Now to choose between CLS and UofC.
Awesome!

Good luck!

As for location... I'm not in the northeast but for some reason I have kick-ass mail service and NYU and CLS mail always gets to my house very quickly and this was even faster than normal - postmarked April 2.

got mine today too in nyc. unlike you, mine is half as much as nyu and even less than half as much as chicago. bah, i really like columbia :/

Super confusing...

Especially since NYU and CLS ask for almost identical info on their forms.

Really?

Wow now I'm scared to look at mine because I don't want to be too optimistic.

When did you submit your aid info?

Thanks!

takingmytime wrote:Does anyone else see something funny with total cost of attendence? What they have listed from room and board is rediculously low - significantly lower that what is listed on the website for 2008-2009 school year. On my sheet the total cost of attendence is 65,200 - this allocates only 1550 or so per month for room + board + personal per month.

Does everyone else who has their finaid package see the same thing?
What did you put for your housing costs on their school-specific form?

If you put substantially less than what their website has, that may account for it?

Probably not, but just a thought...

Is anyone (who's not living in NYC already) considering requesting an unfurnished apartment share?

I'm pretty set on one of the cheap apartment shares, preferably with a non-1L, and I'm thinking about requesting an unfurnished one because I really, really hate dorm furniture- plus I'd kind of like to graduate from the twin sized bed. But I'm not from NYC, will be living at home all summer and can't transport/store my current undergrad furniture, so I'd have to buy it all there. Does anyone know how easy/difficult it is to find used furniture in Morningside Heights? Any thoughts as to whether it's worth it to even try, or should I just suck it up and get a furnished apartment?

Jeez. I didn't realize Columbia still awarded chunks that large this late in the cycle. Was that entirely merit aid?

I'm sorry, I may have misspoken. That was all in grant money (need-based), although I can't imagine that I would have gotten that much were it not for my LSAT.

Yeah, it's got to be a combination of need and merit (or else I surely wouldn't have received as much). The main difference is that even if you get 57k in grants you can't list it on your resume.

Of course, I may be wrong and it's only based on need. But I'm happy with my $ so I'm not going to call and ask questions.

Yeah, I got that... but Columbia told me that, were they to match the scholarship offers I sent them, it would come in my "financial aid" package, so it seems they blur the lines quite a bit.

I'm thinking my "need-based" grant has something to do with my LSAT score, as well.

Congrats to all that received more than they expected.

When did you guys submit the financial aid stuff? Waaaaay before March 1st, or sometime around then?

Late Feb is when I turned in most things but I didn't get my parent's forms in until late march. I think the lesson from that may be that as long as you got all the questions in early (Need Access and that CLS specific form, etc...) they may make a decision but wait to release it until they get the backing documentation.

Of course, that's just a hypothesis.

I got all of mine done in February as well.

In March, after I got offers from Michigan, Duke, and Cornell, I sent them a letter (e-mail) containing all of the offers (pdf) and wrote that I would need for them to make a similar offer if I was to attend. I also sent them NYU's offer when it came a few weeks ago.

They were really nice in their e-mail response and said that, although they don't match, it would be put into my file. When I got my finaid offer, there was a hand written response saying that they had taken my other offers into consideration and that they hoped I would join them next year.

I did FAFSA and Need Access in late February and sent copies of my family's tax returns to the FA office the first week in March.
