Yeah, I selected regular applicant but I am going to call them tomorrow to try and get switched to "loan-only."

No. I don't remember the exact specifics, but as long as what you do AFTER you clerk qualifies for LIPP, they will count those years toward LIPP. If you don't, they will still pay off your loans for you in the mean time, and then if you take a corporate job (where you get a sweet post-clerking bonus), you owe them those years of loans back.

Believe me, clerkships are important for the university, so they will make sure you can afford to do them.

Also, did anyone get an email from the director of the Human Rights Program? Trying to gauge if this is another mass-mail or not... :)

YESS!!! BOY!! I'M IN!!! FROM THE OUTHOUSE TO THE PENTHOUSE!!! THE THIRD WORLD REPRESENTS!! TIME TO TAKE DEAD AIM AT THE RICH BOYS!!!

"You guys have it real easy. I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you’re going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you."

-Rushmore

(lol. No, I did not even apply to Harvard... But found this post amusing. I will take dead aim at the rich boys at whatever school I do end up at.)

I did not get this email so it was probably geared towards those who expressed an interest in this area. I did receive another student email though.

Yeah, I didn't get it either. It was definitely a directed one. Also, I hope I get a student email this time; I never got one.

Question regarding Dean's Certification: should I send that in ASAP? Or do they want it after midterm grades 2nd semester or something like that, to make sure I'm not completely dicking off in my last term?

I'm pretty sure they want it after graduation, to confirm you did, in fact, get the degree.

I'd say just pass everything and you're fine. However, remember that someone might want to see those transcripts someday....

So uh...

What class are ya'll thinking of visiting?

Lots of good options.

I'm thinking Con Law 1st Amendment.

Although Con Law Sep of Powers, Federalism, 14th might be good.

But then again, federal litigation sounds fun...

I signed up for Trust, Vision, and Doubt in Law, Politics, and Ethics- but really, as long as they don't put me in an 8 am section, I think I'll enjoy whatever they give me. :)

Con Law 1st Amendment
Fed Lit
Crim Law 4th 5th and 6th

Top 3 choices.

Not sure whether I want Fed Lit or Con Law to be 1st.

I'm confused how to interpret those grades.

WTF is a 7.2?

What kind of system is that?

They said send them an email and they'd be happy to do it.

Haha. It's the old HLS GPA system: A+ = 8; A = 7; A- = 6; B+ = 5; and so on. 7.2 was the cutoff for Magna Cum Laude, if I remember correctly. I'm far too lazy to click the link.

I dunno. Everybody wins!

Or maybe they give honors based on number of H's or something.

Ya, I did Minow's Con Law: Separation of Powers, Fallon's Federal Courts, and the Comparative Constitutional Law Course.

And yes, I know, my interests are rather apparent.

This is absolutely not true. The % of LPs per class is no more than 10% on average. No one I've talked to at HLS thinks otherwise, and there have been multiple grade surveys backing the 10% or less number up. Well over half of my section did not receive any LPs. That said, HLS professors do follow a strict curve, but the exact numbers on the curve are not clear. H seems to be between 30-35% and LP is very close to 10% but definitely not more than that.

On an informal section survey, over 80% of the respondents said that they preferred the new system to the old. And for those worried about not having great exams be rewarded, HLS allows professors to give 1-2 discretionary "Dean's Scholar" awards per class. This is kind of nice because the awards don't really hurt those that don't get them since the actual grade is the same as everyone else who got an H, but it still rewards excellence in a visible way.

Here's a link to the surveys on grades. Take a look at section 5, notice it's the only section that had full participation: --LinkRemoved--
