Here's a thought--are there any HLS 2012 admits from or near NYC who might want to meet up and hang out some day during Winter Break?

I might! I'll be in New York for a few days around New Year's, visiting my brother, who is doing TFA there. (In this small world, you might even know his roommates, who went to Yale for undergrad.)

Here is what my pen pal sent me about housing:

It is my opinion that if you can get a room in Hastings or North, you
should. They cost a little bit more, but there are unique advantages
to either. Hasting's location is pretty great, and the vibe of the
building is as social as you want to make it. I really love the view
from my room and living room--and the living room is quite large. The
kitchen situation seems to be pretty even across all the dorms: if
you're big into cooking, then get an apartment. So I love Hastings,
but the dealbreaker for a lot of people might be the bathroom
situation. The bathrooms are hilariously awful. In my case, it comes
down to one shower, one toilet, two sinks for about 8 dudes? The
bedrooms are small too, but that doesn't bother me too much, as I hang
out and often study in my living room anyway.

North is pretty nice, you get your own bathroom, and you don't have to
deal with a 120 year old building. The downsides are no living room,
and 5 minutes extra commute. It's also less "social". These cons
aren't that big of a deal, in my opinion. Let's map this out into a
decision tree!

1) Are you trying to save money?
If Y --> Gropius
If N:

2) Is having your own, unghetto bathroom a big deal for you?
If Y --> North
If N:

3) Do you NOT want to have to deal with a roommate?
If Y --> North
If you don't care:

4) Would you really enjoy a 120 second walk from your room to your classroom?
If Y --> Hastings
If N:

5) Do you love bay windows, sitting on them, and looking out to nice
views of Cambridge Common?
If Y --> Hastings
If N: go find an apartment.

Please note that I don't place "socialness" in this tree, because if
you want to see and make friends, you can see and make friends. We
hang out quite a lot as a section, and no one's missing out because of
where they live. (except maybe if you live in an apt REALLY far away)

Hey All! Joining the thread.. just got in yesterday. Are the only on-campus options North, Hastings, or the Grad Center (Gropius)?

abenn07;

Unfortunately, I will be out of town from Dec 27 until Jan 4 or so! :( Oh well...

Re: Hastings...

Isn't it true that you don't necessarily need to have a roommate if you're living in Hastings? I guess it's pretty unlikely, but, based on the website, there seem to be about 25 units where you won't have a roommate in Hastings: http://www.law.harvard.edu/current/stud ... -hall.html

Of course, they're more expensive.

No bathroom is big though.

I study and do my best thinkings in the bathtub.

Hey Guys,

Now that everyone has at least one major law school acceptance in the bag, has anyone thought about what they might do over the summer before law school?

Are people looking to get a job mainly to make some money, to get an internship that would offer a cool experience, to try to find an opportunity to work with a law firm, just stay home and veg out, or something else?

I was planning on using winter break to do a small bit of research about summer opportunities and was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts.

Considering that I've done a program or research or an internship or classes or something every single summer since 7th grade, I think I'll take it easy this summer. :)

Probably going to work through June, spend July somewhere warm and foreign (Spanish lessons in Guatemala with my wife?), and spend a good part of August visiting our families in Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

If you have any questions about the Spanish lessons (or where to go) let me know :)

I'm going to take French lessons in Quebec this summer... really excited!

Ha, that sounds like fun! However, be warned, my French teachers always mocked the Quebecois because they apparently have a very unique and not too-well-loved accent. However, bonne chance!

Well, my boyfriend is Quebecois, and his parents only speak French... :shock:

Anyway, I doubt I'll ever be fluent enough that I'll have any sort of accent at all, besides American!

You never know, living a language lets you learn it much faster/better than a classroom... And sorry, I meant no disrespect about the Quebecois!

I don't know, but my wife is coming to as much as they'll let her. This is as much a life change for her as for me -- and I think HLS needs to respect that.
