As long as you meet Boalt's residency requirements I don't understand why it would be a problem. Are you leaving CA after you graduate? That shouldn't matter, I was just curious as to how many fellow Boalts plan on bolting after they get their degrees.
We're planning on staying, as of now. My husband will still be working on his bachelor's out there, and since he is going for IT/comp sci, it's pretty much the best location in the country for career prospects. :D
Look at it as a risk/reward proposition. What benefit do you get by joining the said State Bar Association today that you would not get should you wait until you graduate? Are those benefits worth risking over $30K that you'd pay in non-resident tuition in the event you got a registrar/residency clerk who is a stickler for the "intent to make it permanent" bit. I've quoted a couple of things from http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Residency/legalinfo.html
Berkeley Registrar's Website wrote:Who is a California Resident? If . . . you want to be classified as a resident for tuition purposes, you must have established your continuous presence in California more than one year immediately preceding the residence determination date for the semester during which you propose to attend the University, and you must have given up any previous residence. You must also present objective evidence that you intend to make California your permanent home . . . .

Establishing Intent to Become a California Resident Indications of your intent to make California your permanent residence can include registering to vote and voting in California elections; [etc., etc.]; licensing for professional practice in California; and the absence of these indications in other states during any period for which you claim California residence. Documentary evidence is required. All relevant indications will be considered in determining your classification. Your intent will be questioned if you return to your prior state of residence when the University is not in session.
The underlined clause is key I think. For while joining another state's bar association may not technically be licensing for professional practice in another state, it could give the person adjudicating your claim reason to reject your application for residency. Just my $1/50th, but I wouldn't risk it.
Well, I'm pursuaded.

Update from Dean Edley on the budget:
From: Christopher Edley <edley@law.berkeley.edu>
Date: Thu, 18 Jun 2009 17:05:29 -0700
Subject: Budget update
To: Students - 1L <students-1ls@law.berkeley.edu>, Students - 2L
<students-2ls@law.berkeley.edu>

Dear Berkeley Law Student:

I write to update you on the financial situation at the Law School in
light of the on-going budget crisis in California and the consequent
challenges for UC Berkeley. My central message is one of reassurance:
We will continue to offer the best education of any law school on this
or any nearby planet. At this point I foresee few if any budget cuts
that will have material near-term effects on students.

The most significant program consequences to you will likely be some
modest reduction in the number of small-enrollment offerings by adjunct
lecturers, some slowing of the rapid expansion of the faculty we have
pursued in recent years, perhaps some limitations on the scope of
technical support on computer issues, and perhaps a slight reduction in
the caloric content of the free lunches at speaking events.

On the positive side, it now appears likely that we will be able to
follow through with the announcements I made earlier this spring
concerning expansions in the Loan Repayment Assistance Program, more
summer public interest fellowship grants, expansion of career services
counseling, and several other measures. We will continue and expand the
Boalt in D.C. program for a semester of study in Washington, D.C. We
will continue our program of classroom renovations and construction.
The West Terrace will be completed before classes begin. Excavation for
the South Addition will be complete in a few days. Eight new core
faculty members join us this summer, which gets us three-quarters of the
way toward the goal set when I arrived five years ago of a 40% net
increase in the faculty.

Please be clear, however, that the budget situation remains fluid. The
Chancellor and Provost have not yet finalized the campus plans, in part
because the Legislature remains tied in knots. Gordian, it seems. The
Law School is in remarkably sound shape compared with most other campus
units, and compared with most of our peer institutions. There are
several reasons: our strategy of steadily raising tuition closer towards
a benchmark of about 10% below the average of top-10 schools; the $125
million capital campaign has produced successive years of record alumni
contributions; our low dependence on state appropriations, relative to
other campus units, because the state support for the Law School was
disproportionately cut during the recession earlier in the decade; the
relatively small contribution of endowment income in our revenue stream,
relative to other top-10 schools. The last two points mean we are more
insulated than we would otherwise be from sharp state budget cuts and
the Wall Street meltdown. Make no mistake, times will be tight.
However, I simply do not expect that we will face the extraordinary
budget reductions hitting many of our peer schools.

I hope the balance of your summer is both productive and restful.

Sincerely,

Christopher Edley
Dean and Orrick Professor of Law
Boalt Hall, UC Berkeley

Is it common for students to live in Oakland? What is the commute like? Are there any parts of Oakland that are considered safe/parts to definitively avoid? Is any part of Oakland close enough to campus to walk?

I have spoken with a lot of Berkeley alum and summer associates at my firm, and Oakland is VERY common. I can't answer your questions about the safe areas/areas to avoid, but I am sure someone else on here can. Also, I would check out the "Berkeley 1Ls Taking Questions" thread, and maybe post this in there. It's filled with current students who might have a better idea about the local neighborhoods.

Also, check out Emeryville - it's the town that borders Berkeley, right between Berkeley and Oakland. Much safer - a hip little industrial town with lots of cool shops and places to eat.

I only knew one 1L last year who lived in Oakland. I'm pretty sure he is planning to live closer to school this year. He is the type of guy who almost always seems to have his act together, but his constant reliance on the public transportation system caused him to be late to quite a few classes/events.

Son of Cicero and others who might know: How's the area around the Ashby BART/Berkeley Bowl?

Edit: While I'm at it, another question - Can't 0L's access the restricted content (http://www.law.berkeley.edu/2234.htm) before November? It's not letting me access this page and my emails to the CDO have gone unanswered. [other 0L's - have you tried accessing the page? Any success?]

I've never been to that part of the city, but I've been told it's fairly ghetto. Maybe the next time I miss my train (probably sometime early next week) and have to BART back to Berkeley, I'll get off a stop early and scope out the area. Last year I picked a location using google streetview, which is actually a pretty convenient way to eliminate large segments of Berkeley's residential areas from consideration.

My wife and I have some friends on Prince between Shattuck & Telegraph. When we were at ASD we walked around their neighborhood and it was nice. We tried to find something nearby, but nothing matched what we were looking for. The feeling I got was that west of the station was less nice but livable. Like most of the rest of the city, especially south, the further west you go, the more you want to take a good look.

I cannot remember how to log into BearFacts to save my life. Can anybody tell me if it's the same thing I use for my e-mail? Did we set it up ourselves? I'm drawing a complete blank.

Use Calnet ID (one that you probably changed from the digits to your own personalized user ID) and your passphrase (which is personalized as well). This is not the same as CalMail ID and password, though. The generic Calnet ID and passphrase were sent to us in a separate mail after the acceptance packet. Yeah, all this is a major pain.

Thanks for the info Rotor. And Son of Cicero.

I wanted to check in. How's everyone feeling right now that you're less than 2 months out from orientation? Summer and sunshine seem to have finally arrived here.

Does any one of you know if we need to submit any cert/form of medical records, including vaccine records (MMR, Hepatitis B...), TB exams, etc?
Thanks.

All I could find on the UHS website were vaccination recommendations. The only one that looks required is the HepB for all first time enrollees who are under 19 years of age. Shouldn't apply to anyone at Boalt.

http://www.uhs.berkeley.edu/students/ne ... mendations

This is by no means a definitive Rotor seal of approval answer. Just the best I could find to this point. Anyone else know any differently?

truevines, I think only intls have to submit these [the vaccine records and the TB test results (which has to be within the past year or something ridiculous like that)].

Not yet in NYC. But that aside, I am not ready for Berkeley Law yet. I have lots of things to get done before I start law school. I have to dig up some misunderstandings and bury the hatchets, finalize some open bids and close the deals, loosen some grips and tighten my fist around a few things, oh man I wish I could again quote Frost for the umpteenth time but I've already done that in this forum so can't do it anymore for the pain of being a bore  (sorry for that smiley, TNP  )

Joking aside, I am really excited about Berkeley 8). I just need to get me a good place to live.

I did the same thing. I knew most other schools required immunization records and assumed I was missing it, but I reviewed the list of things we have to do before class starts and there was nothing about any records.

.

I'm ready. I'm kind of on cruise control at my job and loving the summer weather so I could use a couple of extra months of my current life, but I am looking forward to getting back to academia and acquiring hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt :)

I'm excited! I'm working as a personal trainer right now at 24 Hour Fitness and trying to work out as much as possible because I know it'll be harder to do once school starts. (anyone know how far the campus gym is from Boalt Hall?) I also got the new issue of "Transcript" (Berkeley Law Magazine) in the mail. Other people got it I'm assuming? The cover looked awesome. The main story was entitled "Justice League" and was about the East Bay Community Law Center and their efforts to help tenants in the oakland area facing foreclosures. Also has a great article about Dean Edley which includes a timeline of what has happened at Boalt since his arrival. I had no idea a lot of the think-tanks/centers at Boalt were so new and championed by him. And the hiring of 32 core new faculty since his arrival -- that is an amazing achievement. I took 6 years off, and I feel like I'm coming to Boalt at just the right time!

About half a mile, right down Bancroft.

I was able to work out there over ASW because my parents put me up in a hotel and guests got free passes. If you're a weight room man, I hope you're not particularly snobbish when it comes to free weights. I have been a bit spoiled becuase my undergrad gym was completely renovated while I was there, and since graduating I have used a similary newly renovated gym at another school. I thought Berkeley's was pretty dated and grimy.

I actually think formerbruin previously wrote something on TLS about how he's not picky and the gym gets the job done but isn't terribly nice, and I think that's completely on point.

I also get the issue of Transcript but haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
