Not sure if ya'll get the emails we do, but apparently there was something with their new SIS system or something, so they've basically delayed certifying the loans with your bank. Mine are still pending with BoA (Great Lakes) as well with the "We're waiting for more information from your school..." thing.

It still says that I owe the amount of tuition that I received as merit aid (I'm positive I accepted it on SIS). Is this normal?

Did anyone else RSVP for the SBA public service thing and then never hear anything back?

according to finaid, loans were certified today. so now it is in your lender's hands. it takes the lender up to a week apparently.

If everyone owes Gladiator a beer, then I guess I owe him two. Freaking Indonesia.

I faxed my direct deposit form in earlier this week... should I expect to hear something back or just assume they got it?

did your discover fees ever drop down to 3% on SIS?
i just checked and mine are still 4%. i will probably call discover tomorrow and ask what the deal is.

thanks,

Just wanted to post my reply to this PM in case anyone else has the same concern.

Hera wrote:
Mine didn't change yet either. Here's the response I got from Fin Aid last week.

"Discover will inform the University of the proper amount of your loan disbursement. When UVA receives the information, it will adjust your anticipated loan to reflect their non-assessment of the 1% guarantor fee. The loan fee structure had to be set up by the University according to federal regulations. The actual anticipated disbursement is then altered when communication is received from the lender with respect to the actual anticipated disbursement. When the adjustment is made, the anticipated aid on your account will update upon receipt of the actual (not anticipated) funds."

I think this just means that Discover needs to talk with someone at UVA about how much to take out. I just called Discover and the rep. said we can rest assured that they will only take out the % fees they promised on their website at the time of disbursement even if SIS is showing the incorrect fees. They will contact Iris Roberts at UVA again, but the mistake may not be corrected on SIS is in time. However, Discover will direct them as to what fees will actually get taken out.

Hope that helps.

question: how difficult is it to get around if i don't bring a car to charlottesville? i managed without one in undergrad, in a city that seems fairly similar to charlottesville (ithaca), and i'm living on arlington so i'll be close to the law school... but will i regret this in two months?

actually, i'm already starting to regret agreeing to leave my car for my fifteen year-old sister to learn how to drive on, but besides that...

Based on the amazing barracks road shopping center and law school location, I highly doubt you'll miss having a car except for travel. Barracks is literally the most complete shopping center I have ever seen... it has everything and then some.

I don't think I could manage without a car, but if you're used to it and you live on Arlington you'll probably be fine. Barracks is like it's own city, you could live in that place and never need another thing.

I'm not going to have a car. It seems that I'll be able to get pretty much everything within walking distance.

The only place you won't be walking distance from is downtown, but you could probably just get rides/take the bus if you were going there.

I wish they would make OneNote for Macs. I still haven't decided what I'm going to use. Evernote is weird, I don't like OmniOutliner, and Circus Ponies notebook has some quirky things. I guess I'll stick with word.....

What are the advantages of using note taking software over word?

It's a lot freer than using word and works more like a notebook page. So, if you wanted to write some note in a margin, in word you would have to create a new text box while with onenote you just click where you want to type and type. It's also easier to search and has more hotkeys for bullets and such.

I wonder if I'm setting myself up for disaster by wanting to use google docs for note taking. I liked it in undergrad because I could seamlessly use my desktop and laptop without worrying about switching files back and forth.

I'm 99% sure the $10 Microsoft Office student pack available at Cavalier Computers includes OneNote if you have a PC.

Do we just get the software we need for law school when we get there? Is that the whole configuration thing? I'm confused about that...
