Fall: Contracts, Civ Pro, Crim Law, Torts, LRW (1 credit pass/fail)

Spring: Con Law, Property, LRW (1 credit pass/fail), ~5 credits (~2 classes) of electives

Pretty much all the same classes, just different teachers/schedules... high school never ends

You pick 5-7 credits of electives for the spring. I would personally recommend 7 but it makes little difference. Given how important 1L grades are, I would recommend taking classes you think you can do especially well in.

For the record, it's basically impossible to fail LRW so, unlike at other schools, it's really not something to stress about. Despite that, it's a lot of work and really sucks so brace yourself for a year's worth of annoyance in that respect. I'll also say that I dreaded the Oral Arguments for the entire year and it turned out fine and was over before I knew it so even if you hate public speaking as I do, it's not that bad.

Do we get to pick our professors/class times (or even what semester we take the class)?

Why aren't class times evenly distributed? I noticed some classes meet 3 times a week for an hour while some meet 4 times for 50 minutes.

Which classes are 1 semester and which are year-long?

Do we decide when we take exams?

Thanks all!

1. No, not for the seven 1L required courses

2. This depends on the number of credits the course is worth--for the first semester, two are four credits, two are three credits, and one is one credit--and on the scheduling preference of the professor. Also, I'm sure the school doesn't want to make the section schedules too erratic.

3. All are one-semester long except for the LRW course, which is one-hour long both semesters.

4. From what I understand, not for the required and assigned 1L courses, but yes for the electives.

1. You get to pick two classes (more precisely, between 5 and 7 credits) in the spring.

2. In the first semester, three classes are worth 4 credits (unless they changed something) and only Crim is worth 3. Furthermore, the ABA requires a certain amount of class time per credit per semester (for the required 1L classes), which means that even if classes with the same amount of credits have a different amount of time schedule per week, professors can (and typically will) cancel class more often if it is meeting for a greater amount of time per week.

Another dumb question - are all exams open-book/open-note?

Varies widely by class... but more often than not, they are.

I have a question.

I've just been offered the opportunity to continue working for the company I'm currently with as a private contractor for ~$80 an hour for at least 10 hours a week. Do you think working 10 hours a week during 1L is possible? I could probably take a 3-week "vacation" around finals time and overall my hours would be extremely flexible (I'd be working remotely and never traveling).

$80 an hour... I don't see how you could turn that down. 10 hours a week doesn't seem like much, depending on what other commitments you have. I'm sure the amount of time that I spend at events like football games, student organizations, gaming, mindlessly surfing the Internet, etc., will add up to much more than 10 hours a week.

I believe you're not supposed to work during 1L but I'm not sure if it's discouraged or forbidden. We have a very long winter break if you could do it then?

If you have a job in this economy paying you $80/hr, you should probably stay there full time. Seriously... you are very lucky.

Also, if you have to go to law school, you'd be crazy not to do this for 10 hrs a week, if you can schedule to work whenever you want.

I'll be working full-time for them over Christmas break. I just wanted to know if 10 hours per week is impossible during 1L at UVA.

Has anyone figured out how to change your perm and mailing address on SIS? I want to update to my new address in Cville, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious "update" or "edit" option. Maybe I'm totally missing it, or maybe this isn't something you can do online?

First Family was in Cville today. They ate at Virginian and Archs which is awesome (because I've been to both on multiple occasions).

Glad they came when they did, I don't want to be caught in the same town as them.

You do realize that Charlottesville is basically a miniature Democratic political machine, right? There are some McCain bumper stickers around, though. Not many, but some.

Then again, the law school itself is probably one of the most conservative in the country, at least among top law schools. I mean, we're not exactly liberty, but I got the impression that us libruls aren't going to be as comically over-represented as usual.

I got the sense that UVA is fairly healthy mix of liberal and conservative viewpoints, and one of the students at the ASW I attended agreed with this. I think that's ideal. My UG was one big boring liberal echo chamber.

We had a "Senate Simulation" for one of my larger political science classes in UG. When we all chose sides to represent, I think it came to 95 on the republican side of the class and about 5 people on the democrats.

I'll be holding down the old crusty conservative viewpoint on at least a few issues.

Yes, I will be your punching bag.
