Are there any nice apartments/condos/townhomes closer to campus? Ivy Gardens isn't really doing it for me...

Not really, you either get a nice apartment and drive to school or get a decent apartment and walk to school. (or get a decent apartment and drive)

GrandMarc might be pretty good but it's in undergrad central (but also close to a lot of the bars).

I might be wrong but I think all the apartments where you're impressed when you walk in are around Woodlands distance from the school.

Thanks for the info, that's kind of what I was thinking but I figured I'd ask anyway. Woodlands it is I guess!

Anyone know anything about Hessian Hills condos? Are they located in a good area?

Thanks, after a little more investigation I realized this!

How do you guys think Woodlands and Hessian Hills rank against the Jeffersonian Apartments and Ivy Gardens In terms of conditions of the apartments, location and cost.

I'm thinking about trying to live by myself and am interested in Ivy Gardens and the Jeffersonian Apartments. Location is pretty important to me but I also don't want to live in a dump. Thanks for your help.

Woodlands has clearly better apartments, but Ivy/Arlington Blvd is fine. They're not going to wow you but it's not like walking into a dump. Cost is about the same since you're paying a premium to live right next to the school. Location really just depends what you're looking for. Ivy and Arlington are in the center of the action and most things are easy walking distance (school, grocery store, restaurants/fast food, softball fields, basketball arena). Woodlands you're going to have drive 10 min or so to everything so it just depends what you prioritize. Unfortunately nobody's been smart enough to put fancy new apartments right near the law school to make the best of both worlds.

Hey,
I was accepted to UVA RD in early December, and it has become one of my top choices. I have a couple of questions- has anyone RD received merit aid aside from full tuition scholarships, and would dorm housing still be available in late March/ early April? I plan to attend the first ASW in March.

You do not want to live in on-grounds dorms.

If you want to live close, live in Ivy Gardens or somewhere on Arlington Blvd. Something will be available in March.

What are the options on Arlington Blvd and how would I go about finding details? I see that there are some older townhouses and also apartments, is that what you are referring to when you say Arlington?

Also, could anyone estimate what percentage of 1Ls live where... like Arlington, Ivy, Jeffersonian, Woodlands, other? Am I missing another big one?

*I'd say about half live in Ivy.

*A good 25%-35% live on Arlington which includes:
    Grad Center (LinkRemoved)
    Arlington Townhouses (LinkRemoved)

*The remaining 15-25% live off campus including
    Woodlands (LinkRemoved)

I don't know of a good way to find all the Arlington Blvd places. Each building seems to have a different landlord. You can try http://www.law.virginia.edu/offgrounds/offgrounds.htm or http://www.brac.com/ and search by the street or location (North Grounds).

I was given this link by a member of RELLS (Mormon law student society at UVA).

Any current students on here who live at Ivy Gardens? How is the management staff there? I've read and heard a lot of bad things about it so far.

Ditto, it got really bad reviews on apartment ratings.

Anyone know anything about the Jeffersonian apartments? Are they nice, furnished, etc.? I think I want to live by myself for 1L (is this a good idea) and they seem to have the best rates for a 1 Bd 1 Bt w/Den. Any thoughts?

I liken Ivy to Days Inn. It's convenient, affordable, and safe.

Apartmentratings consistently has awful ratings for almost any apartment complex. I have a lot of friends living there and the only complaint I've heard is that you're only allowed to get your cable/internet from NTC which is mildly unpleasant. It's generally regarded as the social center given how many 1Ls live there so maybe pick somewhere else if you're afraid of noise.

hokie, I'm not one hundred percent positive if I am attending UVA or not (it will depend on money, of course), but are you allergic to cats? I'm 22 female but have a furry kitty. Will definitely be looking for a roommate though.

Grrrr... I should be in this group but UVa has been silent for two months now. Almost makes me wish I got a lower LSAT score. Anyway, will Ivy Gardens apartments still be available in a month or so? I'm worried that by the time I'm accepted, I'll be too late. Also, what's the best way to get furniture and stuff? Ivy's website simply linked to a rental place - is that what most people do?

I think you're probably safe on Ivy having apartments still available. I bought most of my furniture locally because it's pretty expensive to rent and you'll be here 3 years.

I plan on making the drive up to Ikea and getting some nice stuff. I have bought a few pieces there before and they all held up quite well for the price.

Great link - many thank yous.

I'm warming up to the idea of Ivy Gardens for the convenience/price factors and the fact that Jeffersonian seems to be a difficult place to get what you want. Exactly how noisy is it?
