The MacBook bundle looks fairly priced, though I don't like the fact that you have to wait until August to receive the laptop, and the machines don't appear to be configurable. Anyone else have opinions on these?

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but do you have to use the laptop allowance to buy one of the bundles? Or can you get one from elsewhere?

You can get it from elsewhere.

I don't know much about computers, but the Dell looks like a bad deal. $1,700 is a lot, especially for something with a shitty video card. I think I'll wait until winter break to buy a new laptop - Windows 7 should be out by then, and perhaps the system requirements for Diablo 3.

My boss just got an HP laptop for <$1000 that is probably a lot better than that bundle one. At least the screen is way bigger.

I agree with what has been said: it seems like we should be able to get a better deal on a laptop, but when I think about passing on the computer loan program, my head is filled with a pessimistic vision of me getting ready for a final when, minutes before the final, my computer implodes and suddenly I don't have a laptop!!!!!!

Do you REALLY think that they wouldn't let you use a loaner? Seems like they'd be cooler than that.... :?

Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but it's just a quick session to set up your computer, not a class.

don't forget to count apple care, which runs about 30% the cost of the machine and is, imo, totally worth it.

Hey I was planning on joining the Class of 2012 at UVA but something's come up and I am deferring for a year. I had already signed a lease at a sweet one bedroom furnished place in Arlington Court Condominiums, but the landlord has been really nice and is letting me out of the lease. It's a stone's throw from the law school so thought I'd share the craigslist ad here for anyone still looking. My experience with the landlord (just a guy running a small business aside from his regular job) has been extremely positive, and he seems very accommodating.

Alright, slight change of topic from computers:

For the first time in almost two decades, I'm going to buy a new desk. Anyone have a sweet setup they'd like to share? I was thinking of something with a wall-mounted monitor, but I have no idea what type of desk would be best for this. Ideas?

Yikes, applecare is $183 to buy on your own. That changes the math even more... the UVA bundle gets you more 'warranty' than you pay for, for sure.

So if you are going to get AppleCare doesn't that mean the law school bundle ends up being cheaper? Add 183 to 1568 and you get 1751. If the law school bundle comes with Applecare then it's a bit cheaper at 1699. That of course doesn't include the free ipod or whatever Apple will have going on come August, but still.

The Dell Accidental warranty is nothing to simply disregard. That's a major advantage over Apple IMO because if literally ANYTHING happens to your Dell, you can take it in to get it repaired for free. Whereas, if you EVER drop your Apple, you'll be the one shelling out the money for repairs or a replacement.

thesealocust wrote: Personally, my experience suggests those warranty programs are rarely worth the $$$, but that can be a subject of great debate. It also depends how comfortable you are fixing/replacing/messing around with your own computer, and the estimated cost of any failure to get repaired and/or replaced by somebody else. Keep in mind most machines come with a fairly generous 1 year warranty standard.

I bought my macbook in december of 2006. Since then I have had 3 new hard drives (not including the original), new disk thingy (cd-rom/dvd), and new keyboard ----- all for FREE because I paid an exra $100 at time of purchase for a 3 year warranty. Granted I clearly got a dud since I've had so many freakin hard drives, but it's never taken more than 2 days to get anything repaired and the Genius bar peoples are soooo friendly and helpful. Although I am sure my experience is rare, I think it was totally worth the money.

I'll also say that despite all my problems, I will never ever ever go back to a pc...

I must say, the debate between Mac and PC users is often as intense as many debates involving religion.

Hahha it's true...my SO has four computers, none of which are macs...I curse him daily :D

Seriously though, I'm not much of a computer person and that is the reason I like macs. It took some getting used to, but processes are so simplified that I just can't go back to the headaches...It's not because I think am a superior computer person, rather an inferior one...I am very very jealous of the accidental damage warranty of dells though because I am quite clumsy.

Edit: used "person" too many times...

Anyone know why the Darden Business School offers the Lenovo T400 but the Law School doesn't?

I wonder if we bought the Lenovo through the business school they would service it there.

Now that I'm home from work and can actually do really long decent posts, here's the vanwinkle analysis of the Cav Apple laptop bundle, which I think is a good bargain for anyone looking to buy a MacBook. (Keep in mind, this is savings from the already-discounted educational prices on these products.)

If purchased through the Apple Store for Education:

MacBook 2.4GHz, standard configuration: $1499

Microsoft Office 2008, Student Edition: $135

3-year AppleCare Protection Plan: $183

(Not available on Apple Store) Norton AV 11 for Mac: $50

Total cost if purchased unbundled: $1867

Savings from purchasing in bundle: $168

Getting loaner laptops for free all 3 years of law school: Priceless :D
