I've been trying to piece things together from what I've read in this thread, but can anyone advise me as to what I ought to do if I can't get down to C'ville until May to check things out in person? Should I wait until I can assess things in person? Try to put a deposit down on a place at Ivy Gardens?

I would say that all just depends upon how picky you are. If you aren't picky and you want to be as close to school as possible, I'd just contact Ivy Gardens and see what they have left. OR, take interest in one of these pretty cool houses listed on the thread for what I would imagine would be a more unique, home-like setting. Otherwise, wait until you can get up there? I'd say that's really a more personal decision....

I think Ivey G, University Heights (almost went w/ this), and outliers (like Barracks West, Autumn Hill etc) will still have availabilities in May. U.H. said they had LOTS available when I was there the other weekend... just make sure you find something in May before the rush. I for one need to see a place in person before signing on.

Since I havent made my decision totally final yet I was worried about this and called up some places. Barracks actually answered and said they had availability, but to submit the application soon. It costs 30/40$ and your refundable security deposit. Which is refundable if you decide not to live there, or so they said.

I feel the same--I'd much rather see places in person. I'm just concerned about places filling up, but maybe that isn't as real a possibility as I thought? I'll do some calling around tomorrow, I think.

Since I will be signing a lease blind....I'd be interested in bribing you for taking photos of your tours

Of course most of the places will say "hurry hurry get it while it's hot, first come first serve"

I'd be happy to, but it won't be until early-mid May that I get down there, if I do at all prior to signing a lease. My main concern, apart from the basics, is the proximity of various places to... everything else. And I don't yet know what else I want to be close to

I'm quite sure you're right about that. Maybe I'll stick to internet research.

i eventually chose the Woodlands, but I talked with Barracks West on the phone a couple times about leasing ~2 or three weeks ago. They're apparently about out of 1 bedrooms, but (when i called at least) they could guarantee you a 2 bedroom apt at the cost of the most expensive 1 bedroom if a 1bdr wasn't available. Seemed like a relatively good deal. / my knowledge of barracks west

one thing i noticed lacking in cville was shopping...

laughed pretty hard when I saw banana republic at the barracks west shopping center...yes because I will just be rolling in extra cash for preppy clothes that I usually have to get tailored
Yea, the shopping isn't very good. There are a few cool boutiques a J.Crew which is a plus, but I guess I'll have to do what I do now and just order stuff in and send back what doesn't work. I am on a first name basis with the people at my post office because I do almost all of my shopping this way. At least Richmond is only an hour away, they have some good stores.
there are some really great malls in nova. tysons corner has spoiled me, mall-wise, for life.

Yeah, it's pretty cool when actual 1Ls help out 0Ls. It says a lot about you.

I LOVE Tyson's, but Stony Point and Short Pump aren't bad and are a lot closer. I assume I won't have much time to shop during 1L, so I've been stocking up on the basics this year. I also needed to add a lot to my winter wardrobe because I'm not used to being outside in the cold for long periods (walking to class, etc.). I got a few more sweaters than normal and a couple of coats. I still think I'm going to be cold.

I think I'm going to start practicing now. I was athletic in high school, but I haven't done any sports or anything in 5 years. Add to that I am lazy and I'm probably not a softball star in the making.

+1. I don't think I even own anything that would be considered a coat - been wearing sweaters/light jackets for as long as I can remember. I guess I will have to hit up some clothing stores before the fall.

Hey everyone,

I'm just on here because I'm looking for a roommate. I'm starting up as a 1L in August. I'm not the neatest guy in the world, but I'm not a total slob either. I tend to go to bed extremely late, though I'm sure that'll change with early classes at law school. I play a lot of guitar, but I try to avoid playing at night; this was never a problem with my roommates in college. Most importantly, I'm looking for something on the cheaper end. Please private message me if you're interested.

I just came across Jefferson Ridge, which looks like an attractive place to live--but am I right to imagine that that living 6 miles away from the law school as a 1L would be unwise? I did see that some earlier in this thread planned to live there (and I understand why, it looks great), but I feel as though it would isolate you from other 1L's. Besides, 6 miles would require cabbing both to and from bars, or any alcohol-consuming event, right? Are taxis even that common in C'ville?

I will be living next door to Jefferson Ridge at the Woodlands, which is pretty much the same thing just with a cooler pool and granite counter tops (those are the only real differences I noticed, anyway). I can see how it might isolate you, but only if you let it. After looking at the options around campus, I didn't think I would really be happy or comfortable at any of them so I decided to go for something further away. I still plan on being very active in the law school community and participating in everything. I don't really mind an 8-10 minute drive, and I'm not a big drinker, so the bar thing doesn't really bother me. From what I hear taking taxis or carpooling is pretty commonplace for those that live further away, and there are plenty of grad students who do it.

I wonder if the 4 UVA grads that got SCOTUS clerkships this year also got full-rides to UVA....

As in, they were already HYS material but were given enough money to go to UVA.

And therefore more likely to be in the top of the class?

Doubtful.
