I think it takes them a bit longer to come up with a decision for applicants without a lengthy credit history, since presumably some human being actually looks at it then. At least, that's usually been the case when I applied for cards (and sometimes there's an issue of where you're actually living since the credit bureaus and databases like LexisNexis tend not to have accurate information on where college students or recent graduates are living).
I got approved for a decent credit line (more then enough for semester's worth of books) for a Discover cashback card this week (I can get $100 back on the first $500 spent during the first three months so that'll ease the pain of buying books a little) so I'd say your chances are decent, too (and their call centers have people with American accents and I think are usually US-based). Before they approved me for a card, they did call want to know what my "current college major" is (I said I guess you can put down "law."), and it took them about three days from when I applied to call me.
I had applied for a Chase Student Card before college, and my credit limit is up to $7000 (I think it started at $3000). If you need a larger line, student cards are definitely the way to go.
Don't ignore the pre-approved ones you probably get in the mail all the time, either. I got a Bank of America card that way. It only had a $700 limit, but it has nice rewards. I used it to pay my second seat deposit.
A buddy of mine is in real estate, so he deals with credit all of the time. He said part of your score is determined by
how many credit cards you have, not just what you do with them. He recommended 2 or 3, even if you don't use them all of the time.

I don't think that's true. I think it's how MUCH of a credit line you have, but it can all be on one card. It does matter how long you have had them, though.

I contacted Courts and Commerce to see if there was a way to charge books to a UVA account and they let me know that we can.
Basically, we have about a $1000 limit at the bookstore that we can use to pay for books/supplies.
Eased a little bit of my current stress.

Interesting, I don't think they bothered to tell anyone that last year.

That's strange. The guy at the bookstore didn't even need to look it up or ask anyone.

Call and double check, but that's what I was told over the phone.

That's good.
Also, I e-mailed the financial aid office to let them know about the loan counseling thing.
Financial Aid Office wrote:We are aware of this. The reason is that this particular feature of SIS has not yet been made a “live” item. When that occurs, you will see your loan counseling status change from incomplete to completed. Thank you for checking into this. I trust the remainder of your summer is enjoyable.

He may have been wrong, but he sounded pretty confident, and he does deal with it pretty regularly.

As I understand it, you're both right. Your percentage of credit used is a HUGE factor in your credit score. You want to keep it below 50% for sure (total and individual lines), optimally 33%. Also, it is good to have diverse credit. It is good to have 2 or 3 revolving credit accounts (lines of credit/credit cards)... but the bigger picture on that is to have different types of credit showing on your report as well. Lenders typically don't want to see you have 2 or 3 items on your report and have them all be revolving accounts.
Another note on the percentage of credit used: some credit cards companies (Capital One in particular) were getting in trouble for not reporting the limit on cards. They reported the limit as the amount used, so it always showed 100% of the limit used. Which greatly hurt a lot of credit scores in error. I THINK this has been resolved, but that's one of the reasons it's a good idea to check your credit report fairly regularly. You can get a free report (without your score) from each of the three major credit bureaus one time per year. Ideally, you would space these out to check your credit report about once every four months. See annualcreditreport.com

Did you guys pick a place yet? I assume limegreen is starting to get a good handle on the local restaurants since she's been here a while but I'd recommend Marco and Lucas, Christian's, Five Guys, or Mellow Mushroom as a good intro-to-Cville lunch spot.

We're heading to Chipotle (shocking, I know), but surprisingly enough I wasn't the one who picked it.
I completely agree with gladiator about all of the above though, they are all fantastic. They are also all relatively cheap which is a huge bonus.

Does anyone know of any specials at the restaurants yet? Like $0.XX wing night at Buffalo Wild Wings, for example. Or if anyone offers student discounts?

Unless you're talking about alcohol related specials, BWW is the only one I can think of with a noteworthy special. The supermarkets offer student discounts but I don't remember any restaurants that did.
I know you guys all love Chipotle but I'd suggest widening your restaurant horizons since Cville actually has a number of good places.

Harris Teeter has a student discount but they said it doesn't start until August so I don't know how much it is. I haven't noticed any other places that have a student discount except the running shoes shop down at the corner.
What is the deal with BWW? I have tried the one here and at home and I just don't find it that appealing. The wings are so greasy and some of the sauces are good but none of them are anything out of this world. What am I missing?

There are only just over 800 restaurants in the country, though they are opening around 100 this year. In fact, there is one opening back home next week, soon to be followed by several more, mere months after I left. I spent the last three years driving an hour each way just to eat at one in VB or Richmond.
I can ignore it when you tell us how gloom and doom our futures are, but I won't stand for you putting "Chipotle" and "mediocre" in the same sentence.

This really screws up my plans, as I'm a broke college grad without the option of going to the bank of dad. Looks like I'll be doing all of my moving-in shopping the weekend after classes start.
That is a great question. How are we supposed to pay for our books?
Indentured servitude at the bookstore.

It's true. I charged my books to my student account last year. Just give them your student ID and you're good to go. It isn't just for books/supplies. You can charge food/candy/etc. to the card subject to a $1-2 minimum charge.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
