That's because you are looking at an interview like having a discussion with a friend, it isn't. Nobody is dumb enough to say racist things in an interview, if that was the bar you have to pass to get hired the interviews would be a mere formality.

Put yourself in the partner's shoes. When you hear a kid say, "my favorite class was X because I really liked Y prof." The hiring partner will reach several conclusions, 1) this kid needs outside motivation to get into a subject because they aren't really passionate about the law, that sucks because they are going to get thrown into the deep end when they start at my firm without a lot of friendly hand holding. 2) this kid bases their enjoyment of assignments off of the disposition of the person doing the assigning, that's not good because I, the partner, can be a huge douchebag. 3) 90% of the time your best grade will be your favorite class, so the partner is going to look at your transcript and think you only like people who give you good grades and don't appreciate the stern taskmasters who are more critical of your work (like bosses who pay you money). Etc, etc. This isn't to say you can't bring up certain professors with recruiters who graduated recently from your school, this just isn't the best time to do it necessarily. There are always exceptions and if you are actually good at interviewing, and not just at making friends with peers, then saying you liked a prof wouldn't be a game changer because you would probably add details to make it an appropriate answer.

The point is that the question is a softball lobbed up for you to smash out of the park, why waste it by talking about a professor who nobody cares about when you can talk about your strengths, and bring the recruiter into a normal conversation with you, and make a solid impression?

So what do people think about taking a seminar or other course next term?

I've heard some seminars have pretty light workloads and are uncurved because they're so small. That sounds like it could be fun, useful, and GPA-friendly.

i'm very interested in Michigan because of this program with the school of information, as well as the highly rated CS department.

Any class at Michigan that's under 40 people is not required to be curved, even if not a seminar. Don't fall starters have a fairly limited range of classes they could take because of the maximum number of credits you're allowed to take? Also, I'm not so sure that taking a seminar or other course as a GPA booster is necessarily the best idea-you'll still have 3 doctrinal classes and your legal practice class, so even if the workload seems light, it's still an extra class on top of the workload you have this semester. If you don't have to take it, I wouldn't. I doubt you'll be at a competitive disadvantage if you don't.

Also, while I'm sure such seminars exist, I haven't had a "light workload" one yet. The ones I've had have all had heavier reading loads (and much more expected participation) than other classes.

I would say DON'T TAKE AN ELECTIVE! We all had to take a second semester elective, and most of us hated it and wished we didn't have to. I think that feedback is why you now have the option not to. Be grateful.

I am! I am planning on just applying to the JD program for now, but I am definitely keeping that in the back of my mind.

Yeah, and if they do, it can only be 2 credits (or less, I guess)! (For others: Current 2Ls or 3Ls had to take an elective, and it had to be either 2 or 3 credits.)

I was actually pretty happy to take an elective. It was pretty easy and will reduce my future burden. If anyone wants to know of my magical elective, PM me.

Can anyone give me some advice about housing next year? I am trying to keep it under $700 per month, and looking for a quiet place (preferably my neighbors wouldn't have any Greek-lettered ping pong tables...)

A lot of people from my section seem to be looking for houses together, primarily within a 5-10 minute walk of the law school. Kerrytown seems to be an attractive option, but it's too far away for what I would consider easily walkable in the dead of winter.

Are you looking for rent under 700 a month, or total housing costs under 700 a month? Unless you do shared housing I doubt you'll find a place including utilities for under 600 a month in walking distance of the school. If you don't mind the LC environment (aka being surrounded by other law students 24/7) you could always apply to Phid, which is really cheap.

Nice, I will be done next Friday. Finishing up with Contracts, definitely scared of JJ's exam. How is ADR? I will be taking it next semester alone with about half the summer starters. Is there a lot of reading? Is there a series of papers or just one final paper? Thanks.

I had JJ for Contracts! And it was my first law school exam. Good times.

ADR is good... the guy who teaches it is super nice and is a practitioner with lots of experience. You do tons of little exercises throughout the semester, and he wants classroom participation. The final paper is only like 30 to 40 percent of the grade. There is a decent amount of reading, but frankly most people skate by without doing much of it (at least the parts that are in the textbook)... mostly because he does assign a lot, but then a lot of it doesn't really get talked about or he talks about in lecture style, without calling on people. He definitely figured that out during the last week, which I felt bad about.

apparently he does it on the fly. I don't REALLY understand it but what he says is that he grades both sections and looks at the curve and figures out what should be worth more. In other words he's more interested in the spread more than anything else.

In any case last year it was about 50/50
